<![CDATA[Dekko2 Developer Community Thread]]>This is a place to coordinate developers working on dekko2. (It is not the place to discuss individual bugs)

In the good old days we had dekko and it mostly worked ok. At some point a rewrite as dekko2 was deemed necessary. The rewrite was started but not completely finished. In addition the platform has moved on beneath dekko (xenial). Time has gone by and development rate of dekko has dropped.

As of today, there is no working dekko for xenial UT.

Over the last couple weeks I see here and there on various UT telegram channels messages pop up about various people trying to work on dekko. Some wrestling with the build system. Somewhere a test build showed up. Some critical bugs were mentioned (settings, system load). Workarounds and some fixes too. I think it's time to coordinate efforts. So we don't independently solve the same problems multiple times, but instead move forward faster.

So all you dekko2 hackers, speak up below with whatever you do / did on dekko2. What you need help with.

Let's make it happen!

PS: This is not an attempt to hijack the project from the current maintainer @DanChapman . Personally, I think the best future for email on UT would be a Dan maintained dekko2 with a small community of developers cooperating. Dan seems to be on a hiatus right now. Let's see what the future brings.

  1. reconfigured all three account to 5 minute IMAP poll
  2. deleted the dekkod.log
  3. stoped dekkod
  4. restarted Dekko2 app
    Connection was fine on datamobile and suspend of the device set to off.

Below you will find a grep of the dekkod.log for the line Running action and the line after which shows the IMAP account number.

The polling is not regular every 5 minutes.

No. First I have had set to 5 and as I could not see the 5-minutes break I thought, maybe it is meant in seconds (even if it says in minutes) and that's why I set it to 60 in the hope of 1 minute.

I will test again because I did not restarted dekkod after the change of the interval.

i.e. it tries every few seconds to get new messages. Why?

Not sure what you've done there (was your device turned on? were you using dekko in the meanwhile? was your network connection okay? have you restarted dekkod after you changed the config?) and there is not much left over from the log here...

I have two account configured and the interval set to 5 (minutes) and i can find this 5 minute cycle in the log. Here's a snippet how it looks like:

I'm far away from saying that there is no bug in Dekko2, but if finding below is a bug in Dekko2 or a new bug/feature/behavior in the OS is unclear. The high CPU utilization of dekkod is a result of reading from time to time again through one of its database files /home/phablet/.cache/dekko2.dekkoproject/database/qmailstore.db (39 MByte in size) with tons of llseek(2) and read(2) syscalls:

I think it's time to remove the Dekko2 installation completely and start again from scratch. The PITA is that there is no way to keep the configuration, one must configure all by hand from scratch. And this (mixing config values with data) is really a bug in Dekko2.

In my IMAP mailbox sits a mail (sent by me from my company account to transfer two data files). This mail is presented in the list view of the mails without:
Subject:
From:
two lines of body preview
Only the avatar, the info icon for attachments and the time of sending is shown.
Selecting this mail for view makes Dekko2 crash.

Are there any plans or milestones for an update of Dekko2? For weeks I do not see any movement in the list of issues in https://gitlab.com/dekkoproject/dekko/issues
only new issues from time to time.

This morning I used the old Dekko in my BQ M10 which still runs the latest beta release of Canonical (I was one of the Beta-tester-group). Is it possible to port the old Dekko to UBports OTA-7 or are there any missing infrastructure pieces?

But, sending is nearly impossible. This morning I wanted to forward a message to my wife because I got the tickets of her flights. It crashed three times on sending the same mail, I gave up. Also if I want to answer some e-mail it is better to do it from the incoming list (swiping from right and selecting the action to be done) than clicking on reply when inside of the e-mail. This way it works perfect, the e-mails are queued and sent.

Also now with the suru-dark theme I have set with Ubuntu Tweek tool app I notice I can not read well the insert e-mail cells as they are very blank, white.

I even ported mutt to my E4.5 running UT. This was lost when I moved to UBports, but I will definitely recompile it again in a chrooted env because Dekko2 is missing some essential features, for example 'view source' of the mail.

On UT devices it worked OK There was a bit of a delay with nexus 7 catching up with OPO restarting dekko help speed things up as well.
The biggest delay was gmail app on android that took 10 mins to catch up. Maybe your issue was just down to the mobile connection. Should be able to check on mobile data tomorrow.

When we first published dekko 2 for 16.04 in the openstore, it was downloaded over 800 times within 3 days or so. 🙂 And i guess most of the people knew what they were doing... 😉
