I actually would back it if I get one running UT, but up to 490k you "only" get an android device.

I am wondering, what will happen to the prototype with UT if the campaign isnt successful? Will the knowledge get lost or will they share it with the community, so maybe some other devices with similar hardware can be ported?

Will libhybris be required for running UT on the Volla Phone?

Yes it does. So they ask you 359 euros to have in one year a phone that is available right now for 270.

It would be a requirement yes, unless all the hardware has open source driver options available.

I'm skeptical of the Volla Phone. That said...

IF a substantial portion of the extra 89 euros charged per phone for the Volla Phone over the Gigaset GS290 were donated to support UT and/or libhybris/halium development, then sure, maybe an extra 89 euros would be justifiable.

But I'm guessing that the conditional "IF" won't be met. And if not met, I don't see what sets the Volla Phone apart from numerous Android phones that could be ported.

I'll be interested to learn more about Volla during Q&A 63.

Volla already have to make some change on halium/libhybris to support the newer Android base (9) on the GS290, so their work could help other porting in others new devices.
Also in Europe is starting a discussion about the protection of EU users privacy against foreign countries (both in hardware and software side),so, imho, this is a good time to show the user interest in this with the adoption of an opensource os on an UE manufactured device... I think this could start or help a process of mind-change in the manufacturer sector and app developers about UT support.

I, too, wish Volla success. And listening to Ubuntu Touch Q&A 63, it seems that Volla has had some success porting UT to run on an Android 9 phone (presumably the Gigaset GS290) using a modified libhybris. However, I didn't hear any commitment from Volla regarding releasing to the community the needed libhybris modifications. Did I miss something?

If that hardware don't have a replaceable battery, then is flawed from start. Open sourced O.S. means nothing if you are limited by this restriction. Also, this phone must have an open hardware and MOST IMPORTANT access to the processor pins that permit loading and debugging the firmware (actually, there must be an accessible connector that offer access to those pins). That means to own the phone. ANYTHING ELSE IS JUST TRICKERY!

Does anyone know if they have contributed something to the community so far or do they just try to sell something to the community?

If I got it right, they have an port of Android9 while the community struggles with Android8.

@makeixo Their libhybris port seems to be based on a Mer branch. It will not be 1:1 usable for us, thats the thing. But we will be able reuse parts of that, yes. So far however, we just discussed it, no further actions were taken.
This is also attributed to lack of manpower on our side. Whoever feels like having too much free time, please start the Android 9 adaptions 😉

@Flohack ok, thanks for clarifying that. We will see, whats happens after the kickstarter project is finished. It would be nice if they can offer it with UT. It acutally doesnt seem like a bad device.
