This thread you mentioned is about an alpha stage build for upgrading to an Android 7.1 base. Its fairly unstable but will become better and better over time. However for daily use only use the installer-provided stable image.

Current Hammerhead port is Halium 5.1 , which works perfectly well, including phone calls.
New port to Halium 7.1 is ongoing. The current stage indicates that audio in calls is not working.
Maybe @<bdi>Flohack</bdi> can give you a more recent update on this...

Does it means you cannot make phone calls from Nexus 5?

I use dekko with an email address with few message per day.
And I don't use too much data otherwise. I'm calling once a day at most and few texts or messages using Teleports.
No tweak done and mostly connected to wifi but also 4G with good signal strength.

Wut?! What configuration options do you have? I've tweaked my governor to be conservative, but even then I last less than 10 hours. What apps are you using? As far as I can tell, dekko is my biggest power consumer...

I want to make clear for those considering the Nexus 5, that the phone will still work as an LTE data device after those cut-offs, and phone calls can still be made using Voip, Google Voice, etc., if your carrier is VoLTE only. There are many regional carriers that do not plan to go VoLTE only, so you should have some traditional phone call service if you live in a larger metro area. But rural folks will likely have to rely on a Voip service for making phone calls.

There is a Voip app in the openstore, but it seems unfinished.

But, not an essential worker, so haven't been out and about with it lately.

Can't put my finger on why, but on OTA-12, it's smoother than it has ever been. All in all a very pleasing experience to use.

Yes. So far as I know, AT&T stopped provisioning 3G voice for new activations back in February (fortunately my spare SIM was activated long before) and will shut down 3G voice in late 2021 or early 2022.

Verizon are shutting off 3G (CDMA) voice in December of 2020, and Sprint prior to the T-Mobile takeover had planned to shut down CDMA voice in January of 2023.

Of the major US carriers, only T-Mobile have not announced a date for 3G shutdown, but T-Mobile don't have the best track record of keeping their customers informed with much lead time.

Haven't tested OTA12 on the Nexus 5 yet, but on the OnePlus One, I've observed the same thing. Battery life is hugely improved. Massive kudos to the developers!
