The battery indicter ticks down visibly when using UT now - even when the phone's plugged in... Making it somewhat unusable as mobile device.

And if it's a new battery that I need, I remember someone saying that there's more than one option - so which is the best one to get? TIA.

Yes! I watched in some horror as a friend of mine took the back off his... I'm not at all keen to do that - I'll take it into one of those phone repair shop places. They can have that stress!

You should add that back cover, if changed, must be chosen carefully, as genuine one holds some antenas and the NFC receptor.

It's not meant to be opened. If I where you I would buy a new when buying the battery. Just in case, they are not expensive.

I'm on RC channel and under the impression that lately my Nexus 5 battery also drains faster than it used to. If the switch of channel solved the problem, then it's software related. If not, it's battery age.

Hi, you probably need a new battery.

But in order to be sure, you can switch to RC or Stable.
With my N5 I go from 100% to 20% in about 23hours with wifi on and bad LTE coverage.

I'll try to find the thread about battery replacement for the N5 for you.
