The development team have not completely ruled that out. But neither would it be a simple operation to pull off.

Yes, security fixes are rolled into each new release. And if an issue is serious enough a release might be pushed forward to get it out as soon as realistically possible.

But because of the (mostly) read-only filesystem, application confinement and application lifecycle, a security issue on desktop Ubuntu would probably pose a different, possibly lesser, risk on UT.

But the further question of if there will ever be a Focal port for the Pixel 2, that depends on someone putting in the work to do so. Anyone is free to roll up their sleeves and jump in.
Requirements are:

  • a Pixel 2
  • dedication
  • free time
  • willingness to learn
  • love of solving issues and mastering hurdles.
