On my OnePlus 5T, I can now install Waydroid using the Waydroid helper app and it seems to work fine. Thanks for making this happen @Flohack , I will now start messing with it to see what Waydroid already can do on this device

RE: WebApps / Webber
Thanks everyone for the feedback!
@aarontheissueguy Yes indeed the Morph-->Share to Webber approach implements the workflow that I'm used to from the other world
@AppLee I agree that Native apps are the best option, but for many cases its probably not worth the effort if you easily get 80% of the "best possible" experience with a WebApp by just a few clicks. -
RE: Raspberry Pi3 progress
I put it on my Raspberry Pi 3, installation was easy and worked without a flaw, wireless keyboard and mouse worked fine. Wifi could be set up without any problem. I browsed the web a little and tried a few apps (Teleports for example worked), and during that the device once rebooted (I have no idea why).
Since a while, I was thinking to use my Pi 3 as a lightweight computer for doing simple tasks, and I tried using it like that with Raspbian, but it is just too slow, the user experience is too bad for me. Also, if you look for Ubuntu Desktop versions for the Raspberry Pi, they are only available/recommended starting from the RPi 4.So my somewhat conclusion is (with my very little testing): It seems to work just fine, but usability is limited by the available hardware.
@mark said in Raspberry Pi3 progress:
@nero355 I can't speak for everyone but for me the main reasons are
- having something inexpensive and ARM based to develop and test apps on
Definitely works if you need it for testing
-
keep the original convergence idea alive
-
potentially open up UT to some of the millions of people who use the Raspberry Pi
I doubt personally that a lot of people would use it, but this could work better when having a version for the RPi4.

@cliffcoggin You cannot change your fingerprint, but you can change your password if needed.

RE: MTP working?
Seems to me that it works fine on the 5T as well.
BTW, I'm also able to access the device data via adb, even though "ADB access" is listed as not working on the devices page.

RE: [Porting] Call for Testers
@nero355 FYI not who you asked, but I can also give you a data point: I recently bought a used one for roughly 110$ (roughly 1/3 of the price for a new one currently as far as I saw). The previous owner used it for 1.5 years and as far as I can tell it still works perfectly fine.

RE: Device Setup on Android 10
@dpitti I can say (I installed UT on such a device a few weeks ago), If you follow the recommended steps precisely you have a very high chance of getting a smooth UT installation experience. So I would just go ahead and install the full Android ROM first, since you have 160 hours time to do this
.
I had Lineage on my device before, and tried to install UT but it did not work. When using the official Android 10 ROM it worked perfectly.Another point: When starting the UT installation, the installer gives you some options to tick, one of them is something like "wipe user data", be sure to activate that one. Otherwise the installation may fail.

RE: Surface Tablet
@moem of course the most likely answer to this post was "nice idea, why don't you do it yourself" and I understand why
Not knowing anything about porting it seems hard for me to do anything meaningful - but actually, reading this: https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/device/x86/ I understand I should be able to just install Lomiri as an alternative Desktop, knowing that its experimental. Would that approach give the full UT experience, also install the core apps along with it?

Surface Tablet
I want to share some thoughts regarding UT on tablets: I just went through the process of finding a device to replace my 12 year old laptop - and got excited when I heard about the JingPad with UT support. It seems this is a very nice combination - for the people that have such a device, I cannot find one anywhere for reasons on the manufacturers side I guess.
So I got my hands on a Surface Tablet and put Debian, linux-surface packages, + Waydroid on there and I think this is also a very nice combination, it seems to work quite well using it either with a keyboard and in tablet mode when using Android apps. This just got me thinking - this would be a very nice device to port UT to - given that these devices are widely available. This would solve the availability problem for sure. I don't know however if there are hardware related or other issues that would prevent running UT on there.
So just to emphasize, this is not meant as criticism or such in any way, just a report from out in the wild with the statement that I would have chosen UT for that system if it was available -
RE: Is Ubuntu touch ready for daily use ?
@ahmed_samy I recently also switched a phone with similar specs (32GB+3GB RAM, Nokia 6.1 in this case) from the official OS it came with when I bought it to LineageOS. The final update they gave the phone was based on Android 10, the last security update was in early 2021. With the latest available Lineage OS it is now based on Android 11 and there are weekly updates to install. It feels like it runs more smooth and is very well usable again. If there was a UT port for this one, I would obviously advertise that one here
, but LOS in this case is also a nice way to keep that "old" phone working well.

RE: GPS on Redmi Note 9 Pro (joyeuse)
@zubozrout said in GPS on Redmi Note 9 Pro (joyeuse):
@ra It is broken on stable, but should work on rc and devel. You can either wait for the next OTA or you can switch channels if you need Pure Maps.
Thanks for the information, I am indeed on stable and will wait for the next OTA.

RE: GPS on Redmi Note 9 Pro (joyeuse)
@nitanmarcel Thanks, I tried with uNav and finally got a fix. Now, I can also get GPS information in the SensorStatus app.
PureMaps does not work on my device (App can be installed but does not start). -

GPS on Redmi Note 9 Pro (joyeuse)
There was a discussion on GPS for the note 9s here:
https://forums.ubports.com/topic/7047/gps-not-working-on-redmi-note-9sI'd like to report/discuss GPS for the note 9 pro (joyeuse). In the thread for the note 9s I think the conclusion was that GPS in Ubuntu Touch works (steps need to be followed as given in the documentaiton (https://docs.ubports.com/en/latest/userguide/dailyuse/location.html), but GPS in Waydroid does not work.
In my case, its is the other way round: Also after giving ~1.5 hours for trying to get a first fix using the SensorsStatus app from the OpenStore, I dont get a GPS signal. However, when using the "GPS Cockpit" android app in Waydroid, I get a GPS signal after a few seconds.
I'm not sure why its different (I understand the same UT port is being used for both devices). Can other joyeuse users confirm whether they see a similar behaviour?

WebApps / Webber
I'm exploring UT for a few weeks now, and I still have to discover many things related to daily use of it :-), so I just came accross the "Webber" app. I would love to hear a bit from longer term users whether they prefer to use Webber to customize their phone, or if there is more value in creating WebApps that end up in the open store?
I just created a few apps using Webber (e.g. Pocket from Mozilla which I like to use), and I think its a very useful approach. On Android I occsaionally do the same with the "Install" function in Firefox for Android - so I also wonder if the Webber approach could just be integrated into the Morph browser actually. -
RE: Does MS Authenticator work under Waydroid?
@alter I have not used MS Authenticator on Waydroid in real life, but downloaded it to see whether it basically runs or not because I also might need it in the future. When you open the app, you receive the message that "some features will not be available" since Google Play services are not available (I installed Waydroid without GAPPS). Maybe it works without, but it just needs to be tested.
Remember though that if you need 100% reliability, Waydroid might not be there yet in general.
If you want to give it a try, try to install Waydroid with the instructions given in the respective thread (https://forums.ubports.com/topic/5907/open-ubuntu-touch-to-all-android-applications/116), and MS Authenticator will be available for download in the Aurora Store.
