And added a new part "rebirth" (La renaissance), as the last one "The fall" (Le déclin), could make readers think uTouch is dead.

What do you think about it (French and others).

Feel free to tell, if i wrote mistakes, or forgot something (and i probably did).

    • RE: Need testers Home Screen for Ubuntu Touch

      Little update :

      screenshot20210419_051500856.png

I managed to find some icons with transparancy (this way you can change background colors @domubpkm :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: ) in /usr/share/icons, i used thoses from suru/apps/scalable, i let them grey for the moment, but color can be changed with Gimp for instance...

I also managed to find some additional URLdispatcher compatible apps, wich are dialer app, openstore app, uTouch settings, contact app.

To add one of them, add an internet widget, and go to "Link URL" field, erase it, and add instead (edited since new findings) :

      • document:// for launching document viewer

      • dekko:// for Dekko mail app, or mailto://xxx@xxx.xxx for opening new mail form to setted address

      • addressbook:// for contacts

      • openstore:// for openstore

      • settings:// for uTouch settings

      • dialer:// for opening dialer, or tel://01.02.03.04.05 for opening dialer with number pre-composed, each number need to be separated by one dot (in this example, it's a french number pattern), "tel" with no number do the same as "dialer".

      • message:// also exists for opening messaging app, but it opens it with form to create new message, i did not find a way to open it the same as if you open it from drawer/launcher, but if you add contact name or contact number after it + a third / it will open the contact thread (thanks @domubpkm for the finding) : message:///01.02.03.04.05

@dalharmony said in Android Apps Is A NonStarter:

I don't see how Ubuntu Touch will ever become more than a curiosity without being able to run them.

That's a bit odd to say that. It's like saying "i don't see how GNU/Linux desktop OS will ever become more than a curiosity without being able to run Windows programms"...

You don't choose GNUL to run windows apps or reject it because it can't, you choose it to free yourself from microsoft or apple. Same is UT with google or apple.

@nero355 said in Life with BQ4.5 after 20.04:

Well, I thought the following would be possible :

Keep using the 16.04 LTS release without OS updates/upgrades.
Keep using the apps that will still work with the 16.04 LTS as long as they do...

Basically what I am doing with my current Android based ZUK Z2 Pro phone

That's what i'm going to do, as i also did after canonical drop.
I stayed 2 years with their last OTA using Open Store.
This time i hope by there Pinephone(s) will be full working devices, i'd really prefer open source hardware so no more vendor obsolescence.

      https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/device/arale/

"This device currently offers minimal features, most of the smart functionalities might not work yet. It can be a very nice second device."

      😲

I run UT on MX4 from its launch by canonical and it's a perfectly fonctionnal phone.
Only battery percentage is bugging, but as i understood it was also the case under android.
I know very few if not no one will get a MX4 now, but its device page is wrong, please correct it.

      @bocephus
Stop being offensive right now please.

You have your thinking about what should be a GNU/Linux user, ok, well, that's your right.
Now being aggressive on other users just because they think different is not in the ubports community code of conduct.

You have twitter or facebook to do that...

You don't need to be so aggressive...

People here don't earn billions to do what they do, like GAFA do.
They earn nothing, and their only reward is optional donations and user using their work.
If you think some things could be better, tell, gently, sure you could even participate to make it better, it's a community work after all...

Now if you need help, ask, gently, and be patient for answer.

Have you even thought your problem could be hardware issue, sim connectors or sim port connectors, have you tried cleaning it?

@bforpc said in runnig a webserver - no chance:

If ubports should be more then a system for nerds and some special interest groups, then it should have more than the other 2 OS'es.

Before anything else, uTouch is a phone targeted os for people, any kind, that wish to get rid of gafam.

All those people need, 90% i'd say, is reliable basic smarphone features first, and if possible when such is done, reliable advanced smartphone features.

Right now there is lot to do for few devs, so just take on you and wait.

You can't ask ten devs or so, to achieve the same work that hundred of thousand do for the other 2 OS'es in the same time.

    • RE: Privacy on UT

      @hekathegreat
Yes UT is a "full" GNU/Linux on the OS part, but a secure mobile oriented one, so you can't install snap ou deb packages in its default state.

On android phones, it runs on some android parts, most of them are vendor drivers, and it needs to use vendor Linux custom kernel to make phone work properly, but nothing from what you do on UT is shared with google (unless you want to, i.e. by using a google account) or any other entity.

Default installed apps have nothing to do with google, contact, messaging, phoning apps, and all the others are from ubports and opensourced and of course ubports doesn't collect your personnal data.

On openstore (wich only require account if you want to review apps) it's the same, only specific apps that has to do with google or youtube account can share some data with google.

Apps on UT are strictly confined, except core apps and some other, reviewed by ubports team.

Search "halium" and HAL (hardware abstraction layer) to better understand how UT works on android native phones.

@Twigg said in Fairphone "gen" 6 is there !:

From what I have read above, it looks like there haven't been too many changes from FF5 to FF6, so perhaps that makes it easier for Ubuntu Touch to get released on the FF6?

I said that ram and rom are the same amount, and screen only 30hz more.
But SoC is completely different, hardware is different.
I guess you misunderstood me, I didn't say FP6 is the same as FP5, I said Ubuntu Touch experience should be the same under FP5 and FP6.

    • RE: Fairphone "gen" 6 is there !

      @rdfrs
It took 2 years for FP5 to reach device page with for now "only" devel channel.
So I would expect the FP6 takes the same time.

This thread is for info only, FP5 is cheaper pristine, can be found even cheaper used, and the FP6 don't have more ram (8GB) or rom (256GB) than the "big" FP5.

It's quite the same phone in definitive, I don't think a more recent Qualcomm middle class SoC will make Ubuntu Touch better, even the 120hz of the FP6 OLED screen will not make the 90hz of the FP5 OLED one outdated.

If you want a Fairphone with UT now, get the FP5.

The porting forum is for the discussion of porting work, build errors, and other wonderful hurdles when porting Ubuntu Touch.

      So thread moved.

For a device to port it depends, lot of time, of what device a porter got and want to port.

But what I can tell you is that the just released Fairphone 6 will be ported, not soon but probably later (after FP5 reach stable state I guess, on 24.04) 😆

    • RE: What is my Halium version?

@Alain said in What is my Halium version?:

UBPorts Installer is built upon Halium, I think.

      No it is not.
Halium is related to installing a "not android system" on an android system native device.
Trivially it is a software that Iinks android hardware device drivers and Linux kernel ("extracted" from an android rom) with GNU/Linux operating system ported to that device.
      https://halium.org/

I see no "halium" anywhere on my computer.

That's perfectly normal. You, as simple user installing UT on a device, don't have to deal with halium.
You only have to unlock bootloader and install the required android rom on that device.

have Android 11, but how do I check my halium version?

Again, you don't have to, you "only" need to install the required android rom.
If it's android 10 then android 10 it is...
      No halium stuff for you.

To summarize, what you need to know, is the android version installed on your device.
And if needed you have to install the exact one required before installing Ubuntu Touch.
