Hey all. Not sure right now if this is a sim card, install, or skill issue.

Just bought a brand new in box (probably actually Google refurb) pixel 3a, unlocked. I got UT installed without too much fuss and have been messing with the phone.

Later in the day, I put the sim card in when I assumed excess battery drain was the phone searching for signal despite not having anywhere to look. Verizon instantly popped on. A few hours later, I was messing with the phone and noticed no more cell signal. I decided to not care.

This morning, still no signal, so I messed around with turning on and off flight mode, manually selecting the carrier, and changing the radio to use. I got service again and then a minute later it disappeared.

Anyone have ideas? I may stop by the Verzion store to get a 4g sim, as mine is 5g, but works fine in my 4g flip phone.

@ducky Verizon, assumption is USA. VoLTE is not available on this device (yet?) which means you cannot use 4G in the US and as they have stupidly switched off 3G, your device will not function as a phone. The developers are working hard to get 4G VoLTE working on some devices, but it is really difficult due to each manufacturer implementing their own standard.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7.... And more...
          I have too many devices...

@MrT10001 i didnt realize they were exclusively volte, but it is what it is. still, im getting NO service in any consistent manner. i would expect it to at least show thats its connected to a network, but it doesnt stay connected when i get it to do so

@MrT10001 I am having similar issues to the original poster. I use Google Fi service (the U.S.) and when I insert my sim card, I cannot make phone calls nor receive ones. I am not sure if I need to specifically configure my sim card (I just inserted it and restarted.)

Based on your comment, does it mean that if my Google Fi sim card only supports 4G, it will not work on my pixel 3a? If so, maybe I will get 3g sim card from Google Fi.
              Thank you!

3G is turned off on all US carriers. VoLTE (4G) does not work for calls or messaging. You won't be able to receive MMS, only SMS. Your phone should function on 2G. This requires a setting change in Ubuntu Touch where you turn off 4G support.

Data should work on 4G, but not calling or MMS.
Data will be slow on 2G, but you can make/receive calls with lower quality sound and some delays. You can also receive SMS text.

Ubuntu Touch currently does not support VoLTE (4G) or higher for the Google Pixel 3a. Similarly, your carrier may or may not allow your Google Pixel 3a on the network. You will need to check with your carrier. If the carrier accepts your phone, only expect 2G calling and SMS. Calling and SMS may have some delays. 3G service is not available in the US. If you need faster data and are not expecting calls, switch to the 4G setting in Ubuntu Touch.

I've tested the Google Pixel 3a in the US with a 5G SIM card.
