How can we make different hardware work out of the box?

Given the read-only filesystem of Ubuntu Touch, it would be essential to have as much as different hardware components as possible (like Touch Screens, Modems, Sensors etc.) work out of the box. Is this even possible? Do those components usually have mainlined drivers?
