No pause/play from Bluetooth headset

I am fairly satisfied using UT on Oneplus One, I just got it and it seems to be working fine.
I use bluetooth headset and earbuds for podcasts and music, the only way to pause is to open phone and use the play pause feature in the running app. The volume control on the headset works normally but not pause/play.
Is there a setting I am unaware of to get this feature working?
Looking forward to contributing here.

Also to add that the same button on the headset will accept and end a call, so I know it has some connection to the phone.
