Focal OTA-3 stable on Xperia X?
-
From UBports devices page I can see that Sony Xperia X (suzu) has got UT 20.04 Focal OTA-3 in stable channel since 10/30/2023. How stable is that release? Does everything work as intended, except Hotspot, NFC and FM radio?

Hi @rugby,
From my experience, the only thing worth mentioning is the improvement in battery life. The bugs that cause you to be forced to switch your device off and on again have increased again.
For me, this is not a major issue, but for others who may need the phone for business, it is.Fortunately, the number of available apps is slowly increasing again.
The transition to UT 20.04 Focal OTA-3 was not too bumpy, had to download and install a few upgrades, also reinstall the apps including the OpenStore.
I'm also pleased that my Xperia X is now being supplied with new security batches again.
Unfortunately, my main camera failed (the device fell on the floor), which is a bit more annoying because spare parts have become quite rare.
Of course, this post is not exhaustive, but perhaps other Xperia X users can also contribute something. As for me, I'm still looking for a main camera.
Best regards Mario

Thanks for your input.
I tried the OTA-2 Focal before but reverted back to 16.04 just because I needed the Hotspot feature.
By the way, is the UBports devices page updated? It says that the X is abandoned but you are still getting security updates. Is it just the porting which is abandoned?
I am still using the Xperia X as my main phone, by the way, and I will probably get back to 20.04 anytime soon. Cheers.
EDIT: By the way, I've just tried 20.04/stable since a few hours ago and noticed that I can't connect to WiFi, at all. I tried reinstalling it using UBports installer, to 16.04/stable, which was working OK, but then when I tried both 20.04/rc and 20.04/stable again, I still couldn't connect to WiFi.
Does anyone have a workaround to this? Regards.

@TakoR I am using my Xperia X as second phone nowadays. So no idea about hotspot, but connecting to wifi does work on devel channel. Not sure about stable. Camera works and doesn't have the half green screen anymore. I would know nothing that forces more reboots than on xenial as said above, but I am not daily driving it anymore. And I am using devel channel.

I am using devel channel.
Because you're such a dare-devel!

Hi,
See own post aboveIn the meantime, I think I can narrow down that it is most likely only the phone application respectively all the components involved for making calls that are responsible for the increased number of device crashes. Mostly when picking up and/or hanging up the call. Usage status: Regular phone operation, without mobile data and also without WiFi operation (wireless network).

You should delete the old connections if you are no longer able to use the wireless network.
Warm regards Mario

May I know which upgrades you had to download and install before proceeding with the OTA-3 installation? It may do it, too, to check whether or not it can solve my WiFi issue.

Mine is different. I can't connect to WiFi but I find that my device crashed only once after my last installation. I had multiple installations before just to check if I could solve the WiFi issue.

Do you mean "Forget Network?" I deleted or clicked "Forget Network" on my previous connections but that didn't solve my WiFi issue as the the phone kept asking for the password again and again.
I am really keen on solving this as I find it hard to go back to 16.04. I tried the 20.04 RC a while ago and went back to 16.04 because of stability issues. When I installed OTA-3 again recently, everything is much more usable like I have a brand new phone. It's just the WiFi which is my problem.

Hi @TakoR,
Well, it's not that I specifically downloaded upgrades. I just followed an earlier recommendation to always download and install an upgrade/update suggested (by the system), even if it's not the right one for now.
So I followed that, and kept doing this "loop" until the desired upgrade (Focal OTA-3) was in place, and always reinstalling the full apps as you would after a major upgrade (Xenial/Focal).Unfortunately, I can't remember the names and numbers because I didn't make a note of them. What I do remember is that it didn't work with just one upgrade/update, because after changing the channel there was already one ready, it wasn't Focal OTA-3, and I don't remember what it was called.

Yes, I meant "Forget Network?" and I think you have to shut down (turn off) the device and then turn it on again, but I'm not sure anymore.
Best wishes Mario

@Mario-CH I got it working now. There was one setting in my router that thought that there was MAC address spoofing going on.
Anyway, this OTA-3 is so good and so stable, especially coming from Xenial. It's even better than when I tried OTA-2, which wasn't tested on the Xperia X.
