It was working before.
I tried another instance. Not connecting -
No issue either. I'm on the RC channel (if that matters), and in uMastonauts I use the fosstodon.org instance.

Thanks for the suggestion! I just tried it with my account, it seems quite fast, and the scrollbar on the right side is wide enough to actually be able to use it! (so far I'd found nearly no usable scrollbars on UT because they were all so thin they're impossible to grab)
I might make a webapp of it for myself with Webber.
