APN setting Difficulty for stable mobile data
-
I'm having the same issues. Did you ever get this fixed?
I cannot add any APNs and changing the ones that are there just make the connection flaky. I'm more than willing to put the time in to help fix this if anyone has any ideas where to start.

Sorry ... no luck on this on my side. However, my edits seemed to work OK. I have "flakeyness" as well, but it is a different issue I think: still some bugs with ofono on halium 9 devices...

Just updating my old posts for others searching:
OTA16 - APN edits allowed stable data over 3G; 4G wouldn't connect and hold, SMS ok, MMS not working.
OTA17 - 3G working ... 4G now gives stable data but breaks push notifications, including incoming SMS. MMS still not working -
@standupmobile I was able to get my mms working (inbound and outbound) using the apn settings for Public Mobile (Teleus, Canada) here:
[https://www.apninfo.com/public-mobile-apn-settings/](link url) maybe they have settings that might work for other carriers as well. -
That is awesome! ... A few questions:
Are you on 4G or 3G?
Running OTA17 or ??
Could you post your APN config file? (I think they are in in /var/lib/ofono/somelongnumber/gprs )I tried the suggested settings for Bell with no luck ...

@standupmobile apologies for not posting more in last post, I should have realised people would want t know more than just APN website I used...

I am on 2G/3G; OTA 17 (stable)

@rdl85 update: over the past 48 hours I have had three incoming mms fail. I have not changed anything in my apn. One failure was fixed after I restarted my cellular data, but two other mms (from someone else) were not fixed by trying that. I even restarted the phone, but no luck. It is clear whatever allowed my mms to start properly working has not fixed the feature completely.
-
@rdl85 update 2: after putting my phone in flight mode then turning it off again, my wifi would not turn back on. I decided to restart my phone. The restart got my wifi working again, but them I also noticed the final missing mms arrived too. Could my wifi crash have anything to do with the mms? Maybe my previous restart wasnt a full restart which is why that mms only arried after the 'second' restart... Sorry if this is obviously unrelated to those who know more about this, i would just love to get to the bottom of this issue so mms can work for everyone with a 3a.

@StandUpMobile do these updates tell you anything more about the issue? Do we know of anyone else in North America that has mms working properly?

Sorry, not much to add here ... but I've had similar inconsistent behaviour depending on how I land on 3G or 4G ... eg: Fresh reboot with 4G enabled vs switch from 3G to 4G, vs cycling cell data and or wifi on off. A lot of variables and tough to debug. Not aware of anyone with 3a and working mms in NA ... but then again, maybe they are not coming here since its working! Sorry to be of no help. On my side, Bell APN on the site you mentioned was the same as what I had; ... and my file is same as yours except you have an IP where I have a domain (no difference when I switch). I would also add that my SMS breaks when on 4G.
-
@standupmobile bummer. Sorry my settings didnt help you out. Other than the occasional restart my mms seems to now be working well. I wish i knew more about why it is working. Do you know of any other logs I should share with this forum in case someone can figure out why my mms is now working?

Just to add a data point. I have been using a Nexus 5 on T-mobile (US) for about a year an a half, with pretty good functionality.
I am switching over to a Pixel 3a, and am currently running UT version 400 (dev channel).Immediately after install phone calls worked in both directions, but Text/MMS could send but not receive. After fiddling with APN settings I discovered that disabling 4G (setting 2G/3G connection type) allowed for text and calls in both directions.
I have also observed the APN setting issues mentioned by others. Existing APN entries can be edited, but new ones can not be saved.
In general the port is coming along very well, and I look forward to a work around for MMS in 4G
Thanks to all who contribute!

Confirmed same behaviour here ... I just discovered that outbound mms works for me on 4G. But nothing (no SMS, nor MMS) inbound (having said that, only tested when receiving MMS from Iphone... which might be an issue) Interestingly, other notifications break for me as well on 4G - eg: Teleports will not show notifications either. Is this your case as well?
PS: Interesting issue here with a cause pointing to missing timestamp in SMS from certain carriers ... although I can't see why 3G and 4G would be different, nor why Teleports notifications would break.... I am currently wondering if IPV6 has something to do with it...

@standupmobile @damiam note that APN settings sticking via the GUI are indeed a problem: you can manually install updated ofono and ofono-scripts packages that help address that. Even then it takes a bit of fiddling to clear out, but note that after that MMS is reliable for photos in and out when wifi is OFF. Wifi ON still is a problem, but broader than the P3a. SMS is now 100% reliable thanks to fixes from @fredldotme
