Hello. I have a pixel 3a xl, I have already installed UT with the nightly updates on. I'd like to try and daily use it. I really don't need everything working as long as it's pretty consistent for calls and texts with the occasional picture sent I'm all good. Unfortunately I currently have Verizon and I know that won't work, my question is is there any USA carriers that work preferably a pre paid option, I was looking at mint mobile does anyone have experience with them on UT ?
I do plan on getting a pinephone pro when it releases but will be definitely trying UT on there since it's my favorite mobile Linux right now. So if you have experience using the pinephone on a carrier would be awesome too.
Again I'm really not concerned if stuff doesn't work as long as it's pretty consistent calls and texts.

Thanks in advance for any info.

From what I have understood across multiple forums so far :

          • You need a provider that is not Verizon.
          • You need a provider that doesn't use 5G.
          • You need a provider that doesn't use VoLTE.
          • You probably won't be able to fully use MMS so please forget about it!

So as long as you can find ANY provider that matches the above requirements then you are good to go! 🙂

          My phones :

          • BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Phone Edition - Ubuntu Touch 16.04 LTS
          • ZUK Z2 Pro - ZUI Android 8.x
          • Xiaomi Mi 9T - Jolla SailFish 3.4.x Community Build

          P.S. : I am NOT a developer! ;)

@reiner2800 - the one reliable network for UT phones in the USA is T-mobile - they will allow non-VoLTE calls and text for the rest of 2022. I've had good success with them directly, as well Red Pocket Mobile's SIM's that use the T-mobile network.

            Best regards,
            Steve Berson

@totalsonic I am currently using tmobile as well for my Nexus 5 and it works fine. I just ordered a Pixel 3a to try out, but I am not expecting any problems.

              Nexus 5 - UT OTA 21
              Pixel 3a - UT 2023-W13

Verizon VoLTE will work (ONLY) with the Pinephone/pro

For everything else, as others have said, until VoLTE gets worked out T-mobile and associated MVNOs are best. I've used Mint, Red Pocket, US Mobile. All worked fine.

MMS is working well for T-Mobile and MVNOs like US Mobile, and also for AT&T users, but with some caveats:

                  • Wifi needs to not be connected to receive or send. As of OTA-21, if wifi is connected, you will get an "oops" message with a download link when a failed incoming MMS is detected. Disconnect wifi, wait 1 minute, and then the download link should work (no need to have sender re-send). Sometimes may take 2 attempts to download.
                  • Incoming MMS group messages work, provided the MMS group already exists (they are a bit cumbersome to set up, but choose the "group icon" to the far right in the "To" field, not just the "+" to add multiple recipients, that will just send multiple individual SMS). Yes group members are hard to anticipate for incoming, so it isn't quite functional. But if the group is created and you send out a message proactively to it, then incoming and outgoing group MMS can be used.

So with those 2 items noted otherwise it is quite functional. I haven't missed a MMS in multiple weeks now thanks to those 2.

@reiner2800 US Mobile plans are for $12/mo (before tax and fees.... so $16.48 for me) and include unlimited voice and SMS, and 1GB cellular data (needed for MMS).

I remember Group MMS working a lot worse for a lot of people so I guess some progress has been made in that department then! 🙂
