RE: While VoLTE is a worry, video calling working is actually a BIG DEAL
@totalrando Google Voice works on my P2XL.
We are working on a sip solution to stand in for VoLTE. We've had some good progress this week.

RE: USA carrier
Verizon VoLTE will work (ONLY) with the Pinephone/pro
For everything else, as others have said, until VoLTE gets worked out T-mobile and associated MVNOs are best. I've used Mint, Red Pocket, US Mobile. All worked fine.

RE: PinePhone
@Andrisk Sounds like it got stuck on the update. Try this https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=10130

RE: Replacement Batteries
For Nexus 5 PolarCell.
I've put a lot of work into it, and other than doing the Nexus 5X battery mod, no battery works better.

RE: Cricket Wireless
@raydantheman Cricket, as it's parent AT&T, is pushing their whitelist of devices they will allow on their network. OnePlus 6(T) and Oneplus 7(T) are both capable of using the 4G VoLTE network post 3G shutdown this coming January.
So, your answer is to use a device agnostic MVNO such as Red Pocket, US Mobile, Straight Talk, H2O, etc. In the event that UT VoLTE functionality does not get worked out by that date, you have two options:
-
Use a regional carrier. They mostly are not upgrading to VoLTE only.
-
Voip/SIP. By using a voip provider, any device capable of 4G Data can continue to make phone calls despite the lack of VoLTE capability. You just need to be able to access the LTE data network.

RE: Nexus 5 vs Nexus 5x
@jjconstr The Nexus 5 is a great phone, soon to be better with a halium upgrade. The main complaint about it is finding a good replacement battery. I've tried a couple and found the best battery is from a German company - PolarCell Battery for LG Google Nexus 5 D821 D820 BL-T9 EAC62078701 2450mAh. It is available on eBay if you are not in the EU.
It's a good quality after market - which means new, not old stock sitting on a shelf for half a decade, nor is it a cheap knock off rebranded. I've had it for a year now and still holds a full charge just like it used to when I bought the phone from Google.

RE: Oneplus 6 bricked on fastboot mode
You need the MSMdownload Tool from xda-developers forum. It will unbrick your device.
It's a windows only tool. In the forums here, there is a linux equivalent. Search op6 sub-category

RE: Dropping of 3G network....
And I pay $3/mo for sip service. That price has gone up to $5 for new subscribers. That, and my $10/mo data only sim makes the monthly phone bill $15. So, not as expensive as regular phone service in the US with the big three.

RE: Dropping of 3G network....
@MrT10001 Alfred et al, are working on multiple efforts to get it in the dialer, but no results yet.
Currently, our best solutions are the experimental linphone app, and the Google Voice app. Both work well, but have no integration with the dialer and no push notifications. If the app is on and unsuspended though, you will hear it and be able to receive calls (except on devices with aggresive sleep states). So, for example, P2XL can receive calls while sleeping, P3a cannot.

RE: Dropping of 3G network....
@MrT10001 Why I have promoted SIP as a solution to the problem. It gets around all of that by effectively adding a VoLTE equivalent after the fact.

RE: Ubuntu Touch Q&A 124 call for questions.
@Keneda There is, it's called Linphone. Only available for xenial. It was never released to the store because it has a bug that requires manual setup.
It also does not have push notifications, nor sms/mms support which Linphone usually does.

RE: Ubuntu Touch Q&A 124 call for questions.
SIP support in the dialer possible? / or SIP apps with working push notifications? This is becoming very important to users in North America and some other regions, and is an excellent work around for the ever troublesome VoLTE issue.

RE: Is there support for OP6?
I would not say support is dead, but fixes will come few and far between. The P3a/XL and OP5T are far better supported.
The OP6/T does have one major advantage - mainline linux support. I am running mine on gnome mobile via PostMarket. There have been some recent bugs because of recent inprovements, but the postmarket build runs better than the UT build for the device. Recently, gps and sensors have been made at least partially functional, and VoLTE is being worked on. There is effort to get the camera going but it's a lower priority. I think it is quite possible it will be the first fully functional mainlined android phone in a while. Your other option would be the Pinephones of course. They are VoLTE functional now, but have other bugs / pain points.
If you are looking for "just works", then the P3a/XL or OP5T will fit nicely. I do not have a Volla, nor Fairphone to compare with, so I will defer to someone who does.

RE: Is there support for OP6?
@Hugehead The developer is in Ukraine and has been understandably very scarce and hard to get a hold of.
I'd recommend the P3a / P3aXL, or OP5T which are very well supported

RE: In my search for a VoLTE solution for NEXUS 5
Yes, that works to activate the appropriate bands, but it does not activate VoLTE. The N5 hardware is the first gen capable of VoLTE, but was not released with VoLTE radio software except in the China market. This is because it was not capable of circuit switched fallback. China was not using legacy switching when they built out their VoLTE network, so Google did release a VoLTE radio package for that market only. If someone could figure out how to modify that for other markets, then it could be possible if the other unsolved VoLTE issues are resolved.

RE: Recommendations on a few apps
Linphone is not in the openstore. You must get it from the UT Telegram sip channel, or preferably the NA Issues channel where we can help you set it up

RE: Second/burner phone number on UT?
Some UT devices have dual sim slots. Support for them has been mixed. Most use one slot for phone, the other for data.
You could use SIP and a webapp for both calls and messages on a second number, or Linphone for calls. If in the US, Google Voice as a webapp is also an option.
