uAdblock and Notch-hacks on Volla
-
Hi,
today I've upgraded from my beloved E4.5 to a Volla (hopefully that there will come some new devices with same or even smaller dimensions like the E4.5 in the future...)
Everything is working except two things:I've installed and configured uAdblock like on my E4.5, but there're still many (all?) ads shown in Morph. Why is uAdblock not filtering these ads like on my old phone?
I've installed the "notch-hacks" for the rounded corners, but the indicators are still covered by the notch. When I swipe down the indicator bar, it appears under the notch and the icons are all visible. At the moment the signal-strength-icons of the two sim-cards are covered and not visible...
Are there any plans / progress in customizing this behaviour? -
@kristatos Hello.
uAdBlock should work at the same level of protection as on your BQ. Maybe it is not activated.
Try this: deactivate uAdBlock, select all lists again, activate uAdBlock. For your second point, I would suggest using UTTT to choose a scaling that works for you and perhaps uncovers the desired indicators. Personally, I use a grid unit of 22.
Moreover, even with the screen locked, the indicators on the indicator bar are moving : press the indicator bar and move your finger.

I've tested your advice for uAdblock, but it didn't help blocking ads. They're still coming up where my my E4.5 shows none of them.
I've played around with the scaling in UTTT, but the result is that the signal-indicators are moving more to the left and other indicators are covered by the notch instead. I think on the Vollaphone (and maybe other ones with a notch) there should be a reserved area under the notch, where no icon can be placed. So if the bar is full of indicators coming from the right side, they will be swapped over to the left side of the notch.

@kristatos for 1, can you make screenshots ? I will test on my Volla
-
@kristatos @beli3ver The hosts file stay at 0 bytes currently after a reset and a new choice of lists, so maybe there is a problem currently with uAdBlock server or some work being made.
No need of screenshots currently.
A temporary solution might be to copy the hosts file from the BQ and install it on the Volla. I have done this and it works for me.

@kristatos unfortunatelly the noch-hax never resolved the nich problem with the icons (not for me at least), only the corners and the selectable options positions. Not sure, if the covered icons have ever been solved yet

Yes, that's the same I thought. Which file is needed only "/etc/hosts" or more? I've seen in the source code, that there're several hosts-files for each blocklist you've activated. But I will see it later when I take a look at the BQ.
-
@kristatos I only replaced the etc/hosts file on the Volla with the etc/hosts file on the BQ and that seems to be sufficient and works.
-
I've copied the "/etc/hosts" from my BQ to the Volla and now the adblock is working. I don't know, why uAdblock wasn't able to create/fill this file itself.

I've also found a "solution" for the notch which is working for me. I modified the the patch for the vollaphone from unity8-notch-hax so that the panelbar has got a greater height and the indicators are placed under the notch. In that case the space left and right of the notch is unused, but for me it's better than not seeing the indicators (and the screen is still big enough ). Maybe we can find a better solution in the future for this.

uAdBlock doesn't work with OTA-21, that's for sure, IF you try to update the lists. To check if it still works with an OTA lower than 21, I can't.
I discovered this Ad block tester that allows you to check your protection level:

@domubpkm - uAdBlock is working for me on Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro on RC channel - I have 11 out of the 14 available lists enabled and the test link you provided indicated a 90% block rate. So I wonder whether your issue is device wide for Volla or just specific to your install - as it is working on other devices.
Best regards,

@totalsonic The test is to deactivate uAdBlock (0 lists), then to choose new lists: there you will see if/that the new built hosts file remains empty (make a backup of the hosts file before to be able to reinstall it manually).

For blocking ads please consider the following :
- Pi-Hole on your Home Network.
- PiVPN for connecting to your Home Network when you are not at home.
IMHO a great combination that can be used on your favorite Raspberry Pi or any similar ARM based device!
If you happen to have some kind of x86-64 based Server at home running VM's or Containers then you can also use it by just installing it inside a Linux VM for example!
