@moem VoLTE is not a requirement to use T-mobile's 4g anywhere yet from what I gather. I was previously using a 4G LTE phone with no connectivity issues (calls, web, mms)

@moem https://www.t-mobile.com/support/coverage/t-mobile-network-evolution it seems only those using Sprint sim cards are currently effected (I'm using a t-mobile sim. Was working on a galaxy s5 in Jan 2022 which had no VoLTE)

If you are still using a device that is dependent on Sprint’s 3G (CDMA) network or that does not support VoLTE, you’ll need to upgrade to a more modern device no later than the end of 2021 to continue getting service, including the ability to make 911 calls depending on your location"
In any case, 3G is working on the OPO with UBPorts, so I don't see why LTE wouldn't work from the carrier's perspective

Well, we can keep talking back and forth... but for some reason, it's still not working.

@mongoose Have you tried calling T-mobile to see if they support that phone anymore or if it is too old for them bother with. If they still support it then they can help you other than that maybe another network can. Unless a US member can answer for you I can see little other option.

The OPO can use LTE for data, but without VOLTE support in UBPorts, voice calls will still be carried on 2G or 3G (when and where these services still exist).
If you're using the OPO with UBPorts somewhere/sometime that 3G and 4G are coexisting, you can watch it happen: Pull up a web page using mobile data, and you'll see the "L" icon in the status bar on the top. Now, place a voice call and see the "L" replaced with "3G". This is the device falling back to 3G since there's no OS support for VOLTE. End the call and "L" comes back.
T-mobile's announcement of 2G and 3G sunset for their US networks says the T-Mo 3G service ends July 1 2022, and this is the one we care about for the OPO. On that date -- unless you're somewhere T-Mo is still supporting 2G for legacy hardware -- you won't be able to make calls. But depending on where you are, you may get cut off sooner since Big Pink is decommissioning 3G stations as we type and you'll be out of luck . . .
This has already happened to me with an AT&T reseller. 3G service on that network ended Feb 22, but had been degrading before that date. OPO now sits in a drawer unless I need to play Tux Racer.
BTW, UBPorts (and other alternative OSs like Sailfish) will work -- kinda -- for VOLTE-only networks on the Pinephone since that device has VOLTE implemented in hardware in the modem.

Thank you! I'm not using an Op1 currently, so this is neither my circus nor my monkeys, I was just trying to help... but I'm sure others will appreciate your explanation.

@robthebold Good way to test for VolTE, thank you. I just don't understand why the OPO with UBPorts isn't keeping the 2g/3g/4g settings because as you said LTE should work on it for data (and is working on a galaxy s5 and the pinephone). The APN preset is correct in the settings app.
