Keyboard development

Hi folks! I'm a total beginner when it comes to changing code and finding files, etc. However, I'd really like to help out with developing the appearance, themes, and usefulness of the keyboard. I just have no idea where to start, and what steps I can take before being actually useful. Any tutorial suggestions for dummies would very very helpful.

Key interests are:

Learning where files are installed when the OS is flashed

What apps, programs can be used to edit these files (initially only colors and sizes)

Ultimately, how to change things on Git Hub, and how to tell the installer where to pull from.
