where are the homescreen and return button?
-
I have successfully installed without any issue (in the installation process) from a Manjaro 23 into a Nexus 5 hammerhead, yeah! Interesting!
I wonder though: is it normal that the 3 buttons under the screen don't light up and don't allow interaction? Is it on purpose? It feels weird not to have a way to go back to homescreen.

Yes it is normal.
UT is based on gestures.
BTW there is no homescreen stricktly speaking.
When you have one app opened or more, you can focus on an app, or trigger the app laucher, or the app drawer, by swapping from left of screen.
If you want to go back to "homescreen" you have to close all opened apps.Only on canonical legacy devices, like MX4, touch button (there is only one on MX4, wich include led indicator) under screen is used, and it triggers... App drawer ^^ (wich i find convinient, as i'm used to this behavior since 2015, and now my N5 is my daily device, it often happens to me to touch the "MX4 button" place to trigger drawer , even if i didn't even know before reading your post that N5 has 3 touch buttons lol).
Any phone button could be integrated to the UT UI, but it needs to be done for each device, and UT devs have lot of other things to do first.
Maybe some devices, with porter outside of core devs, could do this on their device port, using legacy canonical devices as exemples for implementing.
Also, N5 will probably not have a 20.04 focal port, so no further feature implementation is to be expected on this device.

@tatayoyo if you prefer a home screen to be present, you can install one of the home screen apps from the store

well, it actually does not
in android, virtual on-screen buttons are used
