How to update Xenial to Focal?
-
I've never came around to do the update, so I'm still running Xenial but it's probably time to take the plunge.
After reading a bit, it seems like going through the installer is the best route. However I can't get it to work. We all know about the reboot bug. This appears to be causing issues. In the installer, depending if you tick bootstrap, it'll either try to reboot the device in fastboot or recovery mode. The device switches off, but never comes back on. So I have to unplug, press vol-up+power and it boots again, but of course the installation is interupted.
How did everyone here did the update?

@RandomUser I switched channels in the update section on the phone, cog at top right change to Focal stable. Once it has rebooted, reinstall all apps so you get working Focal apps and not broken Xenial apps.
The other method is the way you are going about it, through the installer.
In both cases back anything up you want to keep.

@MrT10001 Ok, going through the updater in the system settings worked fine. Thanks, looks like I have a working up-to-date system now. Couldn't get it going through the installer though.

@RandomUser Most unusual for the installer method not to work. But at least your UT is up to date. If you ever get a Qualcomm crash dump, don't panic just make sure there is charge in the battery and power cycle.

Hi,
In my experience it is not the case.
I force the fastboot mode by pressing the vol+power buttons and just continue the install.
I'm not sure whether I unplug the device or not, but I didn't have issue continuing or nothing that a retry couldn't fix.But I have also to clarify that I don't own the same device and I know devices with A/B boot might have some additional complexity (not sure if that's the case of the OP6).
