New devices.

My question did not get answered in latest Q&A, so I thought I might ask again.
As we all know that Librem 5 will/might become a new UT device, are the plans to port to other (pre-announced or at least mentioned) phones like Opo3/3t, Opo 5 shelved and Ubports will concentrate to Librem 5 only, or you still continue to create a new ports?
Thank you. -
@stefano this is not an official answer, it's just my point of view: several developers are working to port as many devices as they can. First porting to Halium and then completing the porting with the UT part.
IF Librem 5 becomes a reality, it won't need the HAL (*) part, so it'll be easier to have UBports running in that device. In other words, you don't need the complex hacks to communicate with android because Librem 5 is (will be) android free.
Or as Purism says (https://puri.sm/shop/librem-5/
Running Free/Libre and Open Source software and a GNU+Linux Operating System designed to create an open development utopia, rather than the walled gardens from all other phone providers.

@stefano From what's been said, it seems that the Librem 5 hardware has the potential to really "put the cat among the pigeons". Newer kernel. Not restricted by Android. Fewer proprietary blobs (being worked on). Hopefully it will be a real catalyst for Linux on mobile devices, and a real opportunity for UT to shine.

@3arn0wl @advocatux
I know all this info, just waiting for (almost ) a year is little bit frustrating ( exciting while being developed)
So many of us are waiting for a proper Linux phone, maybe in a meantime we can have something else before Librem 5. -
Sorry. I meant no offense, @stefano.
-
@3arn0wl None taken
-
@stefano As for me; I'm happy enough with UT on my N5 for the moment. I just hope my aged laptop can hold out until a capable converging device appears, because I'd rather use UT/Unity8 than anything else.
-
for me a port to a existing device oneplus or moto g is much more attractive then hope that there will come a librem 5
-
@einstein212 @3arn0wl @advocatux
Yeah, I just don't want to spend an extra money on device that UT won't be ported to. And there is other question of availability of Opo3/3t, Opo5, as new ones are getting rare and not everyone wants a second-hand device for whatever reason. -
@stefano You are totaly right
-
@stefano No worries, we cannot just focus on the Librem, we want to be as broad as possible, as our users might not be happy if just locked into one hardware.
There are many porters doing Halium ports right now, see https://github.com/Halium/projectmanagement/issues and WOW there are many good starting points for new devices already. Hopefully some of them will be great UT devices one day!
