Port to generic x86
-
Hey guys, I just managed to get a Surface 3, and really want to get a decent Linux distro for tablets on it. I was looking for an iso for Ubuntu Touch but cannot seem to find it. I tried installing Unity 8 from the script on Github, but 18.04 is missing basic functionality like the browser and store, and the script has dependency issues on 16.04. Am I missing something? Ubuntu touch on the Surface would be incredible!

For now, Unity8 for the 18.04 (bionic) desktop is in early alpha, and nowhere near ready for daily use. Also, problems installing Unity8 on 16.04 (xenial) are known. See Unity8 Issue #64

Yep, like you, I'm eager to have Unity8 working on the desktop. My thinking is that many will want to try Unity8 on the desktop first, and if they like what they see on the desktop, they'll be more likely to install UT on a phone. That is, having Unity8 on the desktop could serve as a great way to market UT on phones.
However, for now, UBports is (rightfully) focusing on phones, including updating Unity8 to work with the latest version of Mir and adding full Wayland support. That work should be transferable to the x86_64 desktop. So my hope (as a non-developer bystander) is that, if things go well, a usable version of Unity8 will be installable on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS desktops sometime next year.

I think that the devs have made astonishing progress with UT this year... Especially with the exciting Arm64 developments recently. And I think that potential contributors are beginning to notice... Next year could very exciting indeed, for UT on the desktop as well as the phone.

@GizmoChicken Yeah, I was hoping that somebody somewhere made an ISO of 16.04 with Unity8 built in. Windows 10 is unbearably slow on the aging Surface 3, unfortunately

@Danbradford7 This is our Unity 8 telegram group https://t.me/UBports_Unity8 you might be interested in that. Also Ivan Semkin ( @vanyasem )has I believe an ISO image of unity8 but running on Arch Linux. So start with the telegram group.

Have you tried just running Ubuntu 19.10 with Gnome on it? That's what I've got running on the 2 in 1 Asus Transformer and it works quite well, apart from the camera/hdmi not working (which may be hardware issues since I didn't test them before I wiped out Widows on it). If it works, it should be pretty easy to switch to Unity8 once it's stable.

I have been working to get solutions for syncing my Zoho contacts and appointments, as well as Discord, and with that done I want to try using UT on my Nexus5 again as a daily driver. However, being a tinkerer I find doing that on the phone painful and would like to get UT working on an x86 netbook that last had Ubuntu 14.04 installed. The support page says that they need a config file to support x86, but I can't find any documentation on how to create or submit one. Can somebody please point me in the right direction?
Also, I've seen several mentions that apps in the store do not support x86. Is that still true?
