@Flohack 100% sure, big Downloading, do not turn off target sign.
BTW, I just realized that I didn't allow TWRP to write to my device. Could this be the Problem?

@Speiburger No we bypass twrp normally. You can check in recovery whats the content of /data, should be a rootfs.img and a system.img

@Flohack Nope, in the /data folder, there is a bunch of other folders(anr,app,app-lib,etc...) does this mean the first command was not working in the first place?

@Flohack So I tried the first command again, no change, same error :

ln: Die symbolische Verknรผpfung '.halium-install-rootfs.thm7J/cache' konnte nicht angelegt werden: Die Datei existiert bereits

In case you don't know german, it just states that ln could not create a link .halium-install-rootfs.thm7J/cache because the file already exists.

Yeah seems you got 2 issues which one is that halium-install did not work out, and also seems that flashing of the boot image did not work. Are you able to join the German Telegram group, we might be able to sort it out there...

Thanks to @Flohack, @Nandell, @Speiburger, ... I also managed to install Ubuntu Touch on the S3Neo. Here is a short summary of the steps that were necessary: https://pad.ubports.com/p/k6P5Z9kPu1R5t_ocx3J-
They closely follow @Flohack's description on top of this thread.

I am excited! Works for most people now. Can someone please confirm if MMS in and out is working?

I got to play a bit with my new phone today. Wohooooo!

Not sure where to put the bugreports, also, I am not sure if they are halium or ubports specific.
                            Here they are:

Battery indicator seems to be a bit arbitrary. while on charge and then later while in use it got stuck at two percent for quite some time.

Performance: not very fastโ˜น most of it is UI related I think. Probably caused by the lack of hardware acceleration? (If so, how could we get this going?)

Couldn't get the Falcon launcher to run. It installed fine but then I never saw a way to activate it.

Scaling of fonts in the UI (via UT tweak tool) is buggy, when set to 20 some Dialogs and screens do not fit hte display anymore.

Cheers and thanks to all involved here,
                            Christian

The link is missing. Was the project abandoned?

@cyclone018 It is not really abandoned, but the S3 Neo is on the edge of hardware support, so I do not invest much time with it atm. That said, its a bit slow and camera is not working (dont start the camera, you will get into a busy-loop that will drain your battery ;)) but other thatn that its a good opportunity to test-drive UT for example.

Just stumbled across this, when looking at ubuntu touch devices and different ports available.

I got a clean samsung s3-neo, which i'd like to experiment with.

I've flashed loads of roms in the past and just trying to understand all the instructions.

Basically I need to get TWRP 3.3.3-1 and install via hemidall in a linux environment (or Odin in windows)
(i understand this part well enough)

Seen your link for the images here
                                      https://twoot.bin.org.in/nextcloud/index.php/s/y6YosPpXFwoLDJW

I'm guessing you use ADB with the *.img files (hallium boot.img and system.img) ??

                                      any help appreciated

                                      Sun

Thanks. Used to doing this sort of things in windows and not messed with it in linux. Phone being a pain, when trying to get it recognised in download mode.
Got the all the SDK stuff installed. Any thoughts re linux recognising device in download mode ? Changed cables and did all that. Running ubuntu 18.
