Hmm I got a new problem here: Sudden shutdowns.

So basically first I thought I ran out of battery, then maybe the battery gets old and thats why the phone suddenly shuts down, but thats not the case: Just now the phone shut down while connected to charging cable. And with over 60% of battery.

Does anyone know about this glitch? I am a fraid my phone starts dying. N6P was a great idea, but it seems the hardware design was poor. Also regarding this 4-core-bug.

Mine will usually shut down suddenly at any point after 30%, and the battery is quite poor. Never had it happen at higher percentages yet (I think), but I'll be watching for it.

I only got to the point where it gave power watnings and shut down at 0 once. I was amazed.

Ubuntu Touch does not seem to be any worse than 4 core android in this regard on my device. I agree with your conclusion: it's a great phone with even greater hardware flaws.

@Flohack That suspicuously sounds like the beginning of the four core problem, if the phone runs hot under the thumb print reader.

But, could also be a faulty battery. I thought I had the four core problem on mine until I found the controller in the battery was failing. It started doing emergency shutdowns thinking the battery was overheating. I wasn't sure, so I replaced the battery, and problem went away.

@Flohack I still think it's worth supporting even with the four core problem. On four cores it still runs as nice or better than the Nexus 5 or Pinephone, with great sound, camera, and VoLTE support.

So, it's a good, and cheap, entry to mid level phone for UT, and more when running 8 cores.

@potet I had the same trouble with the battery on 30% load. This happens because I used the phone every day for more than 3 years. But after changing the battery with a new one I have no such problems any more.

@rocket2nfinity I agree. It might come our way that we need to generally use only 4 cores maybe. If this is a fatality for all device owners after some time or so.

But for the time being I can publish again 4-core kernel to overwrite after any update. Problem is to get it into our OTA-Update scheme, that wont be easy.

@Flohack I have the problem too. Sometimes when I update the phone and it reboots to install, it drains the battery from around 40%. It crashes between 3-28% too.

I experience frequent crashes preceded by lockups; is that what you guys are experiencing? (The other day, it crashed 3 times over the course of dinner, I thought it was because I was on developer channel). I suspect it has to do with ram usage. I downloaded gnome system monitor from libertine because htop wasn't working for me and it seems that the lockups happen at high ram usage when the 32 mb of cache are filled. I can avoid them by manually limiting my app usage to two to four apps at a time tops.

This is a different thing, I had freezing camera for example, or freezing navigation app, it would continue to work normally only after an endless number of minutes where nothing works, no touch input, no keypresses etc.

Somewhat unrelated, but is navigation supposed to work well? The device fails to give any estimate of my position at all, but it may also be a hardware flaw in my 6P.

@Flohack That does indeed sound like the four core problem - phone heats up while doing something, then stuff stops working, strange errors or actions, and reboots. Once cool, works again, until it doesn't.

@rocket2nfinity Looks like my GPS might be broken then.

SensorsStatus claims it found supported backend and that the GPS is active, and returns "Source status No error". However, "Last updated" is blank, and all the position indicators (longitude/latitude etc) just show a long dash.

The GPS was sometimes acting up on Android towards the end as well, so if nobody else is experiencing these issues it's probably safe to assume it's a hardware problem. πŸ™‚

                                        @potet What he said ^^^

GPS sensitivity is not so good indoors. Your sensors are indicating they are ok, but don't have lock. Try outside. The N6P is pretty quick to lock on with sufficient signal. If it doesn't, and the battery has been changed, then someone likely diconnected or damaged a connector/cable.

@rocket2nfinity No luck, but it's quite likely that it's broken hardware. My 6P has been subject to some serious fall damage, it's a wonder it's alive at all. πŸ™‚

After the latest update (developer channel) it gets stuck at the boot screen though - might be because I upgraded to the newer version of Qt. In either case it's not booting any more, so I'd recommend others to upgrade with caution. πŸ™‚

@potet Just updated Dev channel. Reboots just fine. No strange behavior. Are you on 4 or 8 cores? If 8, then try 4.

Just replaced the battery on my N6P yesterday. Previously, the phone was just sitting unused in my closet until I saw this release. Had some problems with random shutdowns, but that was due to the battery being unable to sustain voltage under high load. With the battery replaced, no random shutdowns, and battery life is incredible.

The new battery cost only $10, but I definitely needed a heat gun to get the adhesive off of the glass and plastic panel. The battery took just time, and a plastic spudger, and 2 playing cards.
                                              Best ten bucks I've spent.

Thanks so much for your work on this. I'm on the dev channel and noticed several things:

                                              1. wifi won't reconnect after suspending until I turn wifi on-off again.
                                              2. The anbox thing where no other app other than the defaults will run.

                                              Thanks again!
