Nexus 6p - step 1 : revert back from Android 8.1?

Hi,
The Ubports installer (running on ubuntu 0.8.2 beta) says I need stock Android 7.1.2 on my Nexus 6p. Mine's on 8.1.

1 - TWRP will not run on [my] 8.1
2 - Do I really need to revert to 7.1.2 first anyway?

yes u need to revert to 7.1.2

u don't need twrp to revert to 7.1.2, u need only to access the bootloader.

but then u need the twrp to install ubuntu touch as u have to format the data to destroy the encryption.

can u please explain why twrp won't work for u ?
