Ive been using a pixel 3a with UT as a daily driver for about a month now, and ive been able to deal with its compromises and bugs except for the fact that I cant recieve texts, which is a dealbreaker. I tried to change the apn settings but that does nothing. I found a work around by routing my texts through axolotl but even that stopped working. So i am looking to try another device before i give up on UT, because i like it and want it to work.
Seems like the xperia X is a somewhat recent device where just about everything works out of the box. All the important stuff anyway. My question is if anyne has tried it with T-mobile US carrier? If so, does calling and texting and mms work? Would like to hear feedback before I purchase. Thanks!

            @zilladog hi
according to my info, the Pixel 3a is newer (vintage 2019) because the Xperiax launched in 2016.

Unfortunately, the problems are the same, because what I got with it is about the problem with the radio standard LTE.

@mario-ch thats too bad. Is there a device you know of that is somewhat recent and will run well on T-mobiles US network?

@zilladog It's hard to look for answers in the forum, you miss a section for overseas problems. But the 3G service shutdown thing in North America seems to be a problem for UT. See also here:

Overseas is relative... it depends on where you are. That makes it a rather awkward term to use here.

                  Is currently using an Op5t
Also owns an Op1 and a BQ E4.5. And an Xperia X. Please, someone... make it stop.

It seems that VoLTE is not mandatory to use 4G for calling as i red on another thread here.

But i think that would need more investigations.

@mario-ch honestly this thread just confused me. My issue is with sms not calling. The calling appears to work fine. And someone said in the thread that T-Mobile supports voLTE anyway. So I don't really know what to make of not being able to receive texts (I can send them no problem) with T-Mobile. Has no one been able to receive texts on this carrier?

@lduboeuf You may want to look at this. Might be your department.

Well SMS, calls, MMS is a very big piece.
Except providing some logs ( dbus.log ), i don't get why sms reception doesn't work. I've heard someone saying that RCS option have to be disabled when changing phone( e.g https://www.howtogeek.com/701714/psa-turn-off-rcs-before-switching-to-a-new-phone/ )

Maybe see if any issues already with LineageOS and your setup ?

@zilladog A bit late on the subject here but I currently use a Xperia X on T-Mobile and everything seems to work for me pretty well. Occasionally a SMS or MMS will fail to come through but I had the same issue on my Nexus 5. That said I haven't had any deal breaker issues thus far and I daily drive it.

@zilladog I too am a little late to this forum post. I just stumbled upon this as I too am trying to figure out what to do with my Xperia X. My recent experience with T-Mobile suggests that VoLTE is required.

I used a Sony Xperia X (F5122, dual SIM version, with an outdated Sony-supplied Android) with T-Mobile in the US for about two years (2018-2019), and then I moved to Canada, where I've been using the same phone for the last two years with a Canadian operator. I had also cancelled my old T-Mobile plan.

When I visited the US last month (November 2021), I bought a pre-paid T-Mobile SIM, assuming that the phone will continue to work with T-Mobile. I could even activate it at the store, using the same phone. But an our or later it was dropped out of the network. I tried switching SIM slots, rebooting, and so on, but none of that worked. So I called customer support (from another phone, of course) and learned that the Xperia X is probably no longer supported. I suspect this is because T-Mobile had dropped support for phones that do not have VoLTE, such as my F5122, by August 2021 or so.

                              https://www.theverge.com/2020/7/23/21336397/t-mobile-require-support-volte-2021-5g-lte

You can check T-Mobile's support status of your phone by entering its IMEI number in their website, here: https://www.t-mobile.com/resources/bring-your-own-phone

It seems that certain non-US versions of the F5122 Android firmware have a toggle switch that can probably enable VoLTE, but I do not want to go down that particular rabbit hole. Perhaps the next time I will give UBPorts a try!
