I have got myself a Meizu Pro5 with the original flyme OS on it and have been reading up on how to flash UB Ports Ubuntu touch onto it.
I seem to have fallen at the first hurdle as when I enter fastboot mode it says that it is locked and I can't proceed with any of the tutorials until I have unlocked it.
        I see the tutorial here:-
        https://forum.xda-developers.com/meizu-pro-5/how-to/tutorial-unlock-bootloader-meizu-pro-5-t3303127
on how to unlock the bootloader has a firmware to download to unlock the bootloader, however, the instruction "Install the update.zip firmware" is not helpful as it does not describe how to install this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had to switch first my Pro 5 to the international version. Do you have the international version? That tutorial starts from this point.

@Stefano yes, they are both tutorials that I have checked but I can't follow them if I have a locked bootloader with out the specific instructions on how to unlock it.
I bet that I am just missing something very simple...

@halucigenia you need to do exactly what is stated on this site:
                  https://forum.xda-developers.com/meizu-pro-5/how-to/tutorial-change-region-id-to-t3323883
Once the Chinese id is changed you can unlock the bootloader and then the rest is easy. Just follow the steps.

@halucigenia if you have international version, just flash this update.zip that is available from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/meizu-pro-5/how-to/tutorial-unlock-bootloader-meizu-pro-5-t3303127

with Flyme recovery that is accessible by holding power + volume up, then select update and clear data as well.

Once the update installed, double check if is developer mode enabled, usb debugging as well, reboot to fastboot and type:
                    sudo fastboot oem unlock

                    and done

@halucigenia even International version has to have this update.zip flashed in order to unlock the bootloader. I pasted link to a downloaded file, ready to be flashed.

Well there you go, thank you, that is probably what I was missing, I will see how the phone responds following that instruction this evening when I get home, but what do I do with the update.zip file before doing that?
Does it need to be copied to a specific location in the device's file structure or something?

Honestly, these types of things are like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle when all the pieces have to be found in obscure locations before you can start fitting any of the pieces together.

I will document, step by step exactly what procedures had to be followed from obtaining the phone to the final result (hopefully) and then others may be able to follow that.

Yes, I just responded to this piece of information regarding the update.zip.

In my previous response "Thanks, but I think that is for the Chinese version. I am sure that mine is an international version" was to this post.

@halucigenia you just plug the phone to PC and copy the update.zip to your sdcard(internal storage) not to any folder, just to sdcard.

(( if you downloaded the update.zip from my link, it will say Unlocked_bootloader_pro5_update.zip. You need to rename it to : update.zip in order to be able to update in recovery.))

Then when rebooted to recovery and select: SYSTEM UPGRADE and also CLEAR DATA (the phone will look up the update.zip and will wipe the phone as well so save your data somewhere else)
It takes some time to update it and then reboot
Once in Flyme, enable developer options, usb debugging.
Reboot to fastboot and type : sudo fastboot oem unlock

Reboot the bootloader to check if it says ,,unlocked''
From there you can try direct flash either with Ubports installer, MDT or terminal command.
                              Good luck.

@halucigenia no my friend, not to externalSD card, just to your phone storage (hence sdcard/internal storage) , not to any folder, otherwise the recovery won't find it.

Thanks, I was confusing the terminology, SD card to me means something different to internal storage.

Well, it turns out that I do have a Chinese version Pro5.
I thought that since I did have an English GUI that it was international.
I even reset to factory settings again and went through choosing English language again to confirm this.
Trying to install the update.zip returns a "Firmware Corrupt" message.

Once I managed to root and install the android term app
                                      I saw that using
cat /dev/block/platform/15570000.ufs/by-name/proinfo from the androidterm app
                                      it listed
                                      machine_type=M576_mobile_public
Which according to the xda tutorial means Chinese

                                      after following the instructions from
                                      https://forum.xda-developers.com/meizu-pro-5/how-to/tutorial-change-region-id-to-t3323883
                                      this changed to
                                      machine_type=M576_intl_official

However, even after following those instructions I still can't get the update.zip from xda to install.
Trying to install the update.zip still returns a "Firmware Corrupt" message.
The update.zip from Stefano also results in a "Firmware Corrupt" message.

@halucigenia You did not installed the correct Terminal app and/busybox app, therefore the changes are only temp and after reboot it rolls back to chinese.

I have just retried from scratch again and made sure that Flyme OS 5.1.3.0A was installed first, which I may have missed last time.
I now have an un-locked bootloader in the flyme version downloaded from xda.

I am just starting to follow the procedures here:-
                                          https://forums.ubports.com/post/4929
as neither Ubports installer or MDT seemed to allow a Pro5 install and phablet-tools seems to be unavailable on Kubuntu 17.10.

@Stefano Please let me know if those instructions should now work for me.

@halucigenia did you downgraded the Flyme to that version mentioned in that post? Newer versions of Flyme were patched by Meizu to prevent the unlocking of bootloader and chnging ID to Global/International.
