Over the last year, I've wondered how to reduce my dependency on US tech giants.

@emmecola a good option, too, I just wanted to go all the way.

@GeorgWeissenbacher @signalapp you might be able to get Android apps to work via Waydroid, according to this video https://youtu.be/HjfwyMuLnPo?si=OiM3BLh3lw8MzehZ

@frumbly yes, that works, but my goal is to avoid Android as much as possible. My current plan is to set up a #matrix instance with a #signal bridge.

@stovis the #fairphone6 even aims to provide support for the mainstream Linux kernel (Ubuntu Touch depends on an Android Linux kernel for now), so there is hope for a fully open #mobilelinux im the future.

@GeorgWeissenbacher Nice! Phones are computers after all. It's so silly that we have been collectively gaslighted to think about devices as "this is a gaming console/TV/phone/etc" when in reality it's all computers, and should be able to run any program.

@stovis it does feel very liberating to run #Emacs on my phone 🙂

I use it daily for over a year and have zero problems with it.

I don't put banking on the phones, so I don't know, sorry.
I suppose I could log into my credit union's web site, but I don't know why I'd want to do that from my phone. I don't think they even have an app.
What do you do with it?

@gemlog @GeorgWeissenbacher @signalapp Well, lots of things: checking transactions, recharging my prepaid card, paying stuff, monitoring my investments 🙂 In fact I rarely use my bank's website, I do everything via app

I use my pc for things and I don't have investments to monitor or whatever. I pay the hydro and the gas on the pc.

@gemlog @emmecola in Europe, many banks require Apps these days to approve transactions using 2FA (even if you do all your banking on the PC).

                                    I have heard that.
At one client I couldn't spend more than ten thousand CAD, but after I got a key with a code that changed every minute I could spend more.

                                      Interesting with Ubuntu touch!

I have pre-ordered a Jolla phone with Sailfish OS
