Any chance of updating 16.04 to 20.04?
-
Hi,
I have 16.04 installed on my Samsung gt i9301i. Has anyone successfully updated 16.04 to 20.04 yet? Is this in principle possible?
@Ubuntu Touch Team: This is a nice operating system, thanks for your work!bm

@bmlu No, unless the porter or someone else do the effort of porting it to focal. Main issue is the old kernel version since focal needs something from newer kernels. Honestly, this would be highly unlikely to happen considering that more popular devices like Nexus 5 haven't been ported to focal.

@kugiigi Thank you for your answer. I thought that during an update, the older kernel belonging to my 16.04/S3 would be automatically replaced by the kernel for 20.04/S3 which I thought is automatically derived from the kernel belonging to 16.04/S3. But this seems to be more complicated ;). So I should buy either a newer device, or I should learn how to port ;), or both ...
-
@bmlu Sadly phones/tablets are a lot more complicated than PCs. Usually they are stuck with whatever kernel version they released with or what their last software update had. Also some companies don't even release their kernel sources even though they are legally required. And some release them but don't release newer versions anymore. Kernal sources are essential to the porting process.

@kugiigi Thank you again for answering. My next phone will definitely be a pine phone or something similar. These phones seem to be less complicated and may be more like PCs, presumably here the update process is also less complicated ;).
ps ..: The main reason why I made this post was that the moment I upgraded to OTA-25, my PC (OS: debian bookworm) started to not recognize the device anymore via usb. This issue seems to be known: https://forums.ubports.com/topic/9661/no-usb-data-transfer-on-pixel-3a/13?_=1711885273676
An upgrade to Focal seems to fix the issue. -
@bmlu If you intend to use UT, Pinephone may not be a good choice. There are great guys who picked up the development and working on making the Pine devices port a lot better and updated but these devices have their own issues and quirks. Specific to UT, the focus has mostly been with Android devices so some things have to be adapted for mainline devices like the Pine devices. Because of this some features may not work or work similarly. Also, my impression with the Pine devices is that even other distros are still having problems in the development especially in regards to drivers and such.

@kugiigi Thanks again for answering. Ok, besides f.e. a pine phone, I find among the promoted phones also the Nexus 5. So this could be a candidate for me ;). But phones becomming more like PCs with respect to updates und more general with respect to hardware specifications/standards etc. would be a nice thing.

Nexus 5 will most likely not be taken along to Focal because of its old kernel and because the hardware is getting positively geriatric.

@Moem Hi, thanks for your post. Oh ok, what phones do you suggest for Focal? Ups I think I can answer the question: In the devices list https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/device/bonito/ one finds the release channel information ;). So f.e. a Google Pixel 3a would do the job
-
@bmlu Currently the popular ones and with active port maintainer are the Pixels 3a And Fairphone 4. I think OnePlus 5/6? also have a great port and UT works well on them.

It would! I use the Oneplus 5t and that is also a fine device for UT. Just keep your eye on the top of that list and see what's on offer.
