Greetings to all. A few days ago I installed Ubuntu 16.04 OTA-9 on a new Nexus 5 (never used previously, never updated).

It went fine, but the sound of outgoing calls was poor, and incoming calls were not received (the phone app was flashing once every time, but no answer to the caller).

My search lead me to the need to update the Android firmware. Armed with the latest image from dl.google.com, I went to install it, but something went wrong.

Now I cannot even boot to any system, and adb devices shows nothing. All I can see is the bootloader and recovery modes, but how do I get the new img files into the phone?

If you're on windows the ultimare tool is:
          Nexus Root Toolkit

Armed with a factory image, if that can't restore the phone, I suspect nothing can.

Update: the problem of updating Android was solved by switching from a desktop to a laptop.

Same OS (Ubuntu 16.04), same USB cable. The only diff is the kernel version, 4.15 vs 4.4, and a slightly newer h/w.

            Funny, isn't it?

Updating Android to 5.1.1 helped the sound quality in Ubuntu, but the issue of not receiving calls still the same. The screen flashes "call error" with a red (hangup) button at bottom for a second, then goes back to dial pad.

The phone works as expected in Android, so it's not the faulty h/w.

Yeah, it seems adb is super glitchy, and so often is broken for no reason.

There really seems no end to the troubles regardless of OS. Glad you worked it out.

try a full install, making sure to select the wipe option.

@Giiba I did several full installs, always with the wipe option, even tried the latest Android 6.0.1 firmware, no result.
What else could I be missing?
My SIM is good, works fine in another phone.
Also: I've been wiping everything I could in the Android and Ubuntu sections of the Recovery mode. Also tried the full reinstall from Ubuntu system settings.

Oh hell! I've just found out that the incoming calls fail from Skype!

This better be fixed asap, because it may be applicable to MS skype for business (dozens of millions of corporate users) and who knows what other systems.

Until fixed, I regretfully will have to go back to the Monster on this phone, I can't afford "sorry I missed your call because I prefer Linux".

@nightshift Is this using the unofficial Skype App or Morph browser? just to help anyone trying to assist you. I have tried either and do you not use Skype so cannot assist further sorry. Other than removing the app and cache etc using UT tweak tool from the OpenStore and reinstalling then trying again with clean settings. If it's on Morph check the bug reports to see if anyone else is having the same issue or use the forum search function I don't remember seeing this recently.

Do calls come through in the Skype webclient on Linux? If so, then it might be possible to get it to work on Ubuntu Touch with some tweaking. Someone might or mightn't be interested in looking into that.
If it doesn't work on the desktop, then no amount of effort will get it working on your phone.

That having been said, in an open source project, where anyone can dive in and try to fix any issues they find, it is not customary to use language like '[t]his better be fixed asap', unless you are willing to put in the work yourself. And sorry, lack of skills is no excuse in this instance.

Furthermore, Skype itself is closed source and centrally hosted, so beyond the power of the community to modify or contribute to.

@Lakotaubp As official as it gets on Ubuntu desktop (https://repo.skype.com/deb stable main). Please read my posts, I'm talking about incoming cellphone calls from Skype desktop to UT.

@nightshift If you are on 16.04 stable have you tried 16.04 dev.

@Lakotaubp Sorry I didn't get your point. My Skype calls are to fixed and mobile phone numbers, and they work fine in any desktop system that I've been using in the past ~10 years. It's about UT phone app that is not accepting calls from Skype.

@nightshift OK.Sorry we might be at cross purposes here. If you are using UT 16.04 stable on your phone can you try 16.04 development(dev) and see if that fixes anything for incoming calls in general. I have no experience using Skype myself.

I though that the purpose of this open source project was to expand horizons, offer a viable alternative and attract people. However, your attitude doesn't seem in sync with those.

All I wanted is to try to contribute by sharing my observations to raise awareness of a potential bug. Do you at least have enough skills to find out if the issue is known?

I'm sorry that you found this issue, but please note that everyone you are talking to (excluding mariogrip and myself) are volunteers for this project working in their spare time to help you. You received this software at no charge to you.

At my expense, I've purchased Skype credit to test this issue. Please stand by.

@nightshift I was not commenting on your desire to contribute. That is applauded. I was commenting on the wording you used that seemed to express a demand on others' time.

Concerning finding out if the issue is known: I wish I had the skills needed to search through the list of issues on on GitHub and Gitlab. But all I can do for now is answer forum.posts...

Unfortunately I am only able to test on the Oneplus One at the moment, my Nexus 5 experienced a soldering iron-related hardware failure. I have a new motherboard in the mail (again, at my expense πŸ˜‰ ).

                                          IMG_20190818_202004.jpg

Everything seems fine here. I wonder if the calling issues you're experiencing are related to an interaction between Ubuntu Touch, the Nexus 5, and your carrier. I can say that I used a Nexus 5 daily for 7 months on an AT&T MVNO and only missed a call when I had it muted (that is, because I was a dumbbell, not the phone).

Since this has deviated from the "Please help revive my Nexus 5" topic, I'd like to ask you to open a new thread to discuss this problem. Please include information like your carrier and any patterns you've found between when calls work or do not work.
