How to coordinate a translation team?
-
Is there any way to keep coordinated all people translating in the same language?
Does anyone know how is the best way to discuss tricky terms, or how to select a word over other synonyms to keep consistency, or how to decide a style book, etc?
TIA

Hi there,
in Launchpad we have had translation groups which has a dictionary for terms. For the German translation: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGermanTranslators/Standardübersetzungen#Standard.2BAPw-bersetzungen_.28Aktuelle_und_Kandidaten.29
It works for the Ubuntu Touch translation in German in launchpad but we don't have all the terms in the list. We have also coordinate the translation work with a mailing list. But there was not very much traffic on it.
Bests, Torsten

@toddy, that sounds great.
It's a pity that weblate doesn't have a tool to set this coordinated task AFAIK.
Maybe the quickest way will be to set a Telegram group or something like that.

@advocatux I think coordination is a good thing, and i have also started to look at what words manuals in the target language use. I think it probably makes quite a bit of sense to try to figure out what words the native speakers are used to find in manuals as well.

@hans1977se, yes I think a tool for coordination like a mailing-list, a telegram group, etc, and a glossary are a must have for translating.
For example, I'm interested in translating to Spanish. eliminar, quitar, desinstalar are perfect translations for "remove" and any of those words are used in technical manuals or devices, but the thing is to choose only one of them to keep consistency. And for that you need a translator team well coordinated.

Would it be a good idea to create a forum category for translations? This forum also supports converting posts to wiki format which could be a boon to "using the right word everywhere".
-
@UniSuperBox, that's a good idea. Is it possible to create a category called "Translations" but with a sub-category for each translation team interested?
The idea is to keep clear the board and avoid a mess between teams.
-
@advocatux I like this idea. Maybe it is enough to have one category "Translations" and we put in the topic the language so that we can see if it is only interesting for the Spanish guys, for the German guys, for all and so on.
-
@UniSuperBox Seems like a good idea, and also if the translation website could have a comment/chat box for every word would be good so that it is easy to add information in the right context. Only a suggestion button like it is now is too limited I think.
-
@toddy, yep that's another way to do it. If there's little participation it really doesn't matter but if there's a lot with sub-categories you eliminate a lot of distracting noise.
-
I've created the Translations category on the forum. If there becomes too much noise in the category we can consider subcategories. Until then, let's see what happens.

@UniSuperBox perfect! Thank you.
