does external display works?

i'm planning to buy this device only to use it as a mini desktop with 4g/wifi internet. i wonder if the external display works. in phone status is marked as untested (?)

@loganj That depends on the hardware if it supports it. Doing a quick search, this model doesn't seem to support it.

@kugiigi well i asked because there are a few cables out there of usb-c to hdmi for mi a2. and some "tutorials" with mira/usb-c to hdmi/chromecast. i thought the phone has hdmi out base on all these results.

@loganj I searched a bit more and I still don't see clear confirmation that it does support wired external display. Any wireless solution won't be good with input lag even if you make them work on UT. If you find an adapter that says DisplayLink, that also won't work because it's proprietary although it is also wired via USB. In any case, if you can confirm that it does support wired external display, then it should just work on UT.

@loganj - to the best of my knowledge Miracast is currently broken for Halium 9 ported devices in general (e.g. it is not available for Volla Phone). I am not sure whether there is a work around for your device for physical cable output to external display, but if sending to external display is a priority for you, I would recommend using OnePlus One or Meizu Pro 5 with Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, Nexus 5 with SlimPort adapter, or PinePhone with their hub dongle, as these all have proven ability to send to external display.

If by mini desktop you mean, a portable desktop that will run all the software you are accustomed to on a regular desktop, then I feel you must be warned that Ubuntu Touch is not (yet) capable of doing so with consistent reliability. Libertine exists as a stop gap measure but it has its own issues currently, especially on community ported devices.

@arubislander as a minidesktop i ment to be able to run a desktop version of firefox and/or chromium, play a youtube without tearing/droping too many frames/etc and other simple things. similar to what you can do with a PI4 but with a better gpu

@loganj Firefox and Chromium isn't natively available and even you're able to use them, they won't be smooth. You can use Morph for that although it's also not hardware accelerated but it works decently.

i thought that since its a linux distro it will have same "basic" apps as normal arm sbc have. -

@keneda The packages are there yes. But even if you install it through libertine for "desktop" usage, it does not work out of the box.
For example I testet Firefox: it starts, but always tells me, that the current tab chrashed.
Chrome doesn't start at all... So it may work with some tweaks I guess, but not out of the box. -
@luksus try firefox-esr and see if it has same problem.
i have same issues under UserLAnd linux emulation on android. with ubuntu and arch have the crash error. but debian has only firefox-esr and that one works. -
@loganj hm, installing firefox-esr just does not work... no idea why.
Regarding your dream:
In theory it is totally possible to install and use some desktop applications if they are availabe for arm(64).
Practically there will be some drawbacks, like drm-video-streams will not work for example. At least, I don't know of anyone who managed to watch Netflix or similar on an Ubuntu Touch device.
