FluffyChat | Ubuntu Touch | Flutter
-
I was in the matrix chat room for FluffyChat and they told me that FluffyChat is a dead app, because they're making a new version using Flutter. So I've come here to ask if UB Ports is going to get that version from Gitlab and include it into Ubuntu Touch?
-
@mrlen What gave you the impression that FluffyChat is an official core app developed by Ubports?
The FluffyChat developer can share his updated Flutter version just like he did before with the qt version on the open-store.
I think the problem is that Flutter on Linux isn't fully there yet and probably needs a newer version of Ubuntu to work. Maybe once UT is on 20.04 it will be more realistic to try porting it.

I think the key to have the flutter version is the switch to wayland. I read that someone already got it working on another distro on the pinephone using some kind of a Sony developed compositor. OSK wasn't showing though.

@mrlen its opensource so even if the developers said no, they cant stop you from forking it, the issue is getting flutter apps to work on Ubuntu touch, as soon as flutter apps work on ubuntu touch, fluffychat is just a hand full of steps away from being a click in the openstore.
-
Oh, sorry. The confusion is that I thought UB Ports selected Linux apps to be included into open-store -- or had something to do with making them available or something. From reading the above, it appears that open-store is the core app and other developers can apply to have their stuff added?
In any case, I have my answer: Fluffy chat won't be added to Ubuntu Touch any time soon because Flutter doesn't work fully with Linux.
I have FluffyChat installed on Linux Mint too -- and I am told that it is probably the Flutter version. But even then, just because something works on Linux, doesn't mean it will work on a Linux Phone. But then again, isn't that what Flutter is all about? Maybe once flutter is ready, we'll see hundreds of apps being added to the Open Store?
Maybe flutter is the key to the future for UB Ports?

Once Ubuntu Touch (UBports is the foundation and community, not the OS, and is spelled UBports not UB Ports) is fully using Wayland everywhere, and Flutter works well on Wayland, then yes, it will be a reasonable option for app developers to bring their apps to UT. But I wouldn't call it "the key to the future" by any means.

@dobey ..at the end of the day, the developers are key to the future
