UBports UT Pinephone and Sim Cards
-
I went out and bought a Simply Mobile (powered by T Mobile) Keep Your Own Phone Sim Kit for a dollar. I then purchased a 50$ SimpleMobile 30 day plan.
All worked fine.
For fun I tried to do the same thing with the Straight Talk bring your own phone plan.
This "provider" has three sim cards in the kit. The phone wouldn't recognize either the AT&T or Verizon Sims, but the T Mobile Sim worked fine.
Sure would be nice to be able to use the bigger networks of AT&T and Verizon.
Cheers!

@planejoe You can use AT&T network via Red Pocket, or Verizon network via Red Pocket or US Mobile. But, UT is not working for calls with Verizon network. So, you will only get LTE data.

@rocket2nfinity Concur, Red Pocket works for AT&T although even after trying various APN configs, it seems to be stuck on 3G.
Other than that, text without pictures works, phone and internet all functional.
Thanks for the tip!

@planejoe You must be in a weak reception area. I get 4G

@PlaneJoe I have an AT&T pay as you go, had to set the APN servers to NXTGENPHONE for both the name and server name, and turn on cellular data, seems to work fine after that, but if the screen locks, when you unlock it you're faced with "SIM not detected" I think that's more on either Phosh or Ubuntu than the SIM though

@Frayedknot If your device is a P3a, several of us have noticed this. It's something to do with UT, not the carrier. I haven't had time to troubleshoot it, so haven't filed a bug report for it yet.
