Small screen UT phones
-
I anticipate replacing my Nexus 5 when support expires so I am looking at possible replacements with screens 5 inches or preferably less. So far I have found the Sony Xperia X compact and the Google Pixel 2. Are there others that are fine with UT?
-
Xperia X has a 5 inch screen and much better support than the X Compact. But I'm sure you've seen that.
I have an X here. It seems like a sweet device and I'm planning to use it for a while soon. Then again, that Pixel 2 you mentioned is based on Halium 9 (no matter what that actually means, we do know that it means that it can run Waydroid and is probably pretty future proof) and the port is active, so it will most likely de developed further.
For a longer period of support, my money would probably be on the Pixel 2.

@moem Thanks for your comment Moem. The X compact drew me as it has the smallest screen and body of all, however if I have to go for something larger, I am drawn more to the Pixel 2.
My ideal of course would have a screen of less than 4 inches, but the chances of that happening are just about zero.

You're not alone in that. Recently a friend told me how much she used to love that device, because it's so small and she loved the sleek and solid feel.
Now this is very much not any kind of guarantee, but I just now read that someone in the Telegram group remarked how they might be interested in trying to build Halium9 for the X Compact.
So, I guess you never know. -
@cliffcoggin @Moem - I've started the process, (downloaded / cloned and started to come up with a manifest), but I'm a bit in the dark, so no guarantees... Any help appreciated.
It seems like kernel-only method is the way to go for 9. I'm using kernel sources from here - https://github.com/sonyxperiadev/kernel/tree/aosp/LE.UM.2.3.2.r1.4 - at the suggestion of @kelmes, creator of halium 7.1 for kugo, and I'm not sure about blobs, I thought maybe - https://github.com/ExplosiveLobster/platform_vendor_sony_loireAny thoughts?

I don't think that @cliffcoggin or I can be of any help, I'm afraid... we're both strictly users of this OS. All I can do is thank you for being willing to tackle it!
-
@moem Agreed. Blobs and binaries mean nothing to me so I would be as much use as a chocolate teapot.
Levone1 if you can make UT work on a Xperia X compact I would certainly buy one in preference to anything larger. As long as phone calls and text messages work I would happily sacrifice many applications for the sake of a smaller phone.

Honest and serious question : Why so small ?!
My Ubuntu Phone is 5 inches and my Android phone is 5,2 inches but when I place a modern 6,4 inch phone next to them there is barely a difference!
Phones used :
- BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition
- ZUK Z2 Pro
- Xiaomi Mi 9T
Keep in mind that you need some space on your screen for the onscreen keyboard and if your screen is smaller then each "key" becomes smaller too!

Because I want it to fit discreetly in a trouser pocket and not tear the stitches with its weight. For example my old Nokia 2720 fold has a 1.4 inch screen and off screen keyboard and is still entirely functional except for the absence of a signal. Overall size 3.5 x 2 inches. A modern Google-free 4G equivalent to that would be my ideal.
-
@cliffcoggin It's currently working fine on X Compact. It's just Halium7 base, so limited features, etc. There's an XC sub-forum here with instructions... I'm using it now

@levone1 I'm almost sold on the idea. Surprisingly there are no secondhand models for sale on Ebay in the UK, and only two new from either Germany or China. I'll keep looking for secondhand.
