Lomiri suggestion
-
I have a suggestion, for a feature. I might be kind of straight forward to add. But maybe i am underestimating this since i am not a developer myself.
I would like to have the option to have the taskbar on the buttom of the screen and make it always visible.
This would be a more modern aproach on multitasking, and also it would fit the newer screen ratios quite well.
In my opinion it is kind of annoying how mobile operating systems operate. The newer devices are really fast, and ubuntu touch is also really fast ui wise. But most of the time i am menu diving.
Another nice option would be to disable the old task switcher, add a back gesture instead and decrease the long press duration to close apps from the task bar/or somthing like first click switches to the app, second click closes it.

With task bar do you mean the indicators bar? Lomiri is top left OS. And it's thought to work on mobiles and computers (in the future)

And old task switcher is the app spread? You can close apps swiping up (you can do more than one at the same time)

@cibersheep i mean the launch bar on the left side. Like the taskbar on windows.
I know how the task switcher works. I think its just unnecessary since the job can also be done with the taskbar.
You pull from the right, you scroll and then you tap. Quite a few stesteps. And it might be necessary to change the grip to do so.

The old Unity later on added the option to put the Launcher on any side but I don't see that happening in Lomiri as it'll be hard to make it work on mobile or touch gestures.
As for the right side gestures, as much as I want a back gesture, the right gestures are my favorite on Lomiri. And back gesture won't be enough because there's currently no concept of "back" in UT. Even if you add that, most apps won't know how to interpret it. You can say that the right side functions are redundant but it can also be considered as the beauty of it. You can do almost the same things on the left and the right sides so you can do them quite easily regardless of the hand you're holding your phone. Also, despite being redundant, they actually differ in scenarios you want them to use for. You usually use the Launcher to switch/open apps that you haven't used recently. I personally barely close apps from the Launcher. While on the right side, you easily switch between 2 apps with a short swipe which is my most favorite gesture. But you can also use it for switching between more than 2 apps since you still have their position in the switcher in your memory and it'll be easy to juggle between them. Closing apps is also a lot touch friendly here. Closing from the Launcher is mostly for desktop usage.

I have not used Windows for more than ten years now.
The Launcher is also where you can pull the Dash. It is designed since Unity (as Kugiigi explains) with smaller screens in mind to computer screens. You pull from the right, you scroll and then you tap. Quite a few stesteps. And it might be necessary to change the grip to do so.
I suggest don't skip the tutorial that appears the first time you install UT and use the OS for some time. You'll get used to it and find your way.
Short swipe from the right will swap two last apps, long swipe from the right will show the spread and you can close the apps with a swipe. No need to tap.
And you are missing that you can alt + tab like Unity. So the «necessity» or «unnecessity» of a feature might be wider in the whole picture of the OS -
Its just A suggestion.
I don't mean multitasking in a way of using two apps at the same time, but more in how the os is managing the apps.
In short i mean that it can freeze and unfreeze stuff more or less instantly.
So it would be convenient to just tap the corresponding button for what i want to do without micro managing the system or think to much in general. In android i works with the free form mode only. The problem is that it just drops the ram management, since everything will be 'in the forefround'

To be more specific, lets call it an idea from the perspective of a passionated user.
I just wanted to describe what i personally want from a mobile device. Since ubuntu touch is already based around the sidebar, one might think it could be well suited for this idea. But maybe i am the only one impressed by this.
I think i got the part with the top-left-os. That sounds not as easy as adding 2 lines of code.
Btw i planning to invest in a new device. On top of the list are the poco x3 pro for its screen refresh rate and the galaxy s10e for its size and build quality. For now it seems more convinient to choose the later for reaching over to the left side.
