What have I done?
Clicking the calendar icon on top of the Calendar page (the one to the left of the settings icon), I get a page where it says "Add Online Calendar". I clink on this link and I get a list of Online Accounts. I pick the middle one of the three CalDav. I click on that and I am taken to a page with URL - where I can enter the URL of the the Google Calendar that I am trying to link to and also enter my google email address and password.
I go to my Google Calendar page and look in Settings and find the Integrate Calendar place. I try entering all 3 URLS shown on the page (at different times as the one before did not work!): Public URL, Public Address in iCal format, and secret address in iCal format. All of them sync....or, at least, the feedback box says that they do......but none of them allows my Google Calendar information to appear in Calendar as I would have expected!
I hit the sync button to the left of the Add Calendar button a number of times and get the same message for all 3 "Synchronisation - finished syncing" and the URL.....but nothing shows up!
What am I missing and where have I gone wrong?

@dunbrokin I seem to remember that google syncing is still broken. Try using the search function in the forum.

@messayisto Thank you for that pointer - following the suggestion shows that the problem seems to be with Google Contacts as most recent posters seem to be able to sync Google Calendar but not Google Contacts. So, not sure where to go from here.

@dunbrokin The google calendar sync is via Accounts in System Settings. Set up the google account and toggle on calendar sync, that should be enough.

@lakotaubp Thank you so much! That was the "get out of jail free card" tip that allowed me to make it work.
NOTE: for anybody following. First set up your Gmail account in Settings. Then click the > arrow and that gives you two slider buttons which allows you to sync either/or or both the Contacts and the Calender.
