Pixel 3a focal, Cellular connection died, downgraded and can't log into phone
-
Hi,
I have a pixel 3a. I updated to focal and it was working well for a while. Today I lost all cell service, so I downgraded back to xenial (stable).
After I updated to focal, I changed from a pin code to a password. When I downgraded to xenial it is now asking for a pincode again. Entering my old code doesn't work, nor does the default? (1234, 0000, 9999?). I assume that change in the file structure from xenial (qt5/unity8) to focal (lomiri) caused this error. Downgrading back to xenial also didn't fix the cellular connection.
It's not a big issue, I'll just reflash and go through the process of re-installing everything. I don't think I'll be able to access any logs.

@mtfd Your not mixing up the pin code for the sim with the one for opening the device? Unless you used the wipe option the security four numbers or passphrase sould not change iirc. This is something I do all the time just thought it was worth a check.
-
@lakotaubp I'll take a look at that. I don't think the sim is locked though? Could explain why I couldn't connect to the cell network?
-
@lakotaubp No, that's not the issue. The sim isn't locked with a pin.
I honestly think it was because I changed from a pin to passphrase in focal, and that change hasn't been reflected going back to xenial. So the ui is expecting a pin when the actual user password is a passphrase? I'm pretty sure my only option now is to reflash ut.
Is there a way I can dump any logs without unlocking the phone? Android recovery?

@mtfd Have no idea on that I'm afraid but you could try asking here https://t.me/ubports_pixel3a I will also move this to the Focal section as at the moment it likes like it might be related.

L Lakotaubp moved this topic from Support on

Humm, i think that downgrading is not a good idea. Pretty sure if you do that on whatever OS it will have many side effects if not from a clean install.
We hear a lot of issues with Cellular on P3a, that makes me afraid of switching to 20.04 as a daily driver.
-
@lduboeuf Yeah, That's fair. I was out when It happened, so it was a last ditch effort to get a working phone again. I think I'll just have to wait for a more stable release.
Kinda sad, I was really liking how much of an improvement 20.04 was.

@fredldotme do you confirm Cellular being not stable on P3a ?
-
@lduboeuf Just reinstalled focal using installer. Got access to phone again and files. Cellular wasn't working because it was set to 2G only. I never set it to that. When I first used focal, Cellular internet wasn't working. turned out "Internet" wasn't enabled in apn settings. It might just be something going wrong with the config files? I'll keep using focal and see if anything changes/breaks
-
@mtfd Is your mobile data working again under focal? Mine (with the Volla) worked for me constantly under xenial, but under focal it's more a gamble. It's set to "2g/3G/4G" but in the indicator it only shows "2G", not "E" for "Edge" like on my E4.5. But with that "2G" there is no internet, not even slow internet. When I play around with reboot/Flight-Mode/insert SIM in and out there maybe comes the "4G"-symbol and then internet is working until the next reboot.
-
@kristatos Have you checked your apn settings are correct? Just worked out that unlike 16.04 where data and mms settings needed to be seperate with 20.04 they can be combined. Might be worth a check.
-
@lakotaubp Ah, ok. I've used the same APN-settings that were used under xenial. I will test if there's any change.
-
@kristatos Yeah, everything is working as expected. It's almost like everything cellular is stable, the incorrect configuration just keeps getting applied randomly.
-
@mtfd You would be better creating your own thread then as it seems different and on another device.

I've installed todays devel-update (R368) and tested again and everything is working as expected. Interestingly it worked even without setting an APN and with none selected mode (e.g. 2G/3G/4G).

@kristatos Even better then problem sorted and an improved 20.04 3a.
Edit: Got mixed up yours was the Volla.
