Fairphone 4 android 12 install ubuntu touch
-
@Keneda I'm already upgraded to Android 12. This was basically an automatic update when turning the phone on. I haven't unlocked the bootloader because it shouldn't really be unlocked unless I'm installing an OS. If Fairphone won't allow me to unlock bootloader on Android 12 so be it.
Is it true the you can't lock bootloader with Ubuntu Touch? I don't fully understand bootloaders in the smartphone world, but from what I do understand it's less secure to have bootloader unlocked and might cause certain banking apps to not work which I don't use anyway.
If Ubuntu Touch will be a long running project, I'll assume will likely see Android 12 replace 11 in the coming years.

Of course they'll let you unlock bootloader under A12.
But if you want to install UT and intend to have a full working phone, then you'll have to downgrade to android 11 FP OS (keeping bootloader unlocked of course).
And yes, maybe some day android 12 will be a basis to install UT, but for now, most recent UT ports are based on android 9 or 10.
FP4 is the only one in my knowledge to be based on 11, and that could stay like that for months or, more probably, years.
See there if you want to install UT : https://forums.ubports.com/topic/8916/options-to-install-ubuntu-touch-after-an-ota-upgrade-to-android-12

@Moem thanks for letting me know

@Keneda I decided to get a second Fairphone 4 to run both Ubuntu Touch and FairphoneOS. I want to clarify the core issue. If I follow the instructions of Ubuntu Touch, I will not be following Fairphone instructions for unlocking the boatloader.
That means they're is technically no absolutely safe way to install Ubuntu Touch on the Fairphone 4 at the present day. If something goes wrong unlocking the bootloader on Android 11, Fairphone has no reason to provide support because you wouldn't be following they're instructions. If you unlock the bootloader on Android 12 and install Ubuntu Touch you wouldn't be following Ubuntu Touch instructions.
Seems to be a disconnect between the two communities.

@dp27thelight
Why don't you just do like the member i just gave you the post link above, he had no problem downgrading to A11 after unlocking bootloader under A12, and then installed UT without problem...And Fairphone community has nothing to do with how to installing UT on FP. Here on ubports forums are the UT experts, and porters, and devs, and members like me.
On FP forum, there is only members (some for sure experts in FP and FP OS, but not in UT).
Anyway, do like you want ^^

@Keneda Looks like you donβt need to update fairphone 4 to unlock bootloader. If you update fairphone 4 it will upgrade to Android 12 which isnβt officially supported by Ubuntu Touch.

Looks like we're going round in circle here... -
Upgrade your FP4 from A11 to A12, unlock bootloader, downgrade from A12 to A11, install UT, enjoy

The method for unlocking the bootloader is the same on 11 or 12 that does not matter. You just need to unlock the bootloader.
The only part I am not 100% on is if UBports works from android 12.
Every OS including us tells people to be on the latest version todo some stuff. In this case as android is going anyway it does not matter. -
Just checked in FP4 group and yes you can install UT on android 12 but a lot of stuff will break so please don't try. There is also no issue with unlocking the bootloader on 11 not 12. The end.
