Bring devs to UT
-
Just a topic to exchange ideas.
How can we convince more devs to come to this project and help it grow in a faster and reliable way? We have cookies (well i reject or block most of them but we can bring actual cookies ) -
@StephPTi I guess lots of devs are turned off by the fact that app development experience on desktop Linux doesn't necessarily translate to UT. Because of confinement the app lifecycle, apps in UT experience a different runtime environment than they would on the desktop, and possibly other mobile Linux variants, such as Plasma mobile and the others.
-
I believe though, that confinement and the app lifecycle is one of the features that makes UT a viable mobile OS, and that maybe we need to work on explaining it better and setting it in the positive light that it so much deserves.
-
@arubislander What you say is totally true, but the fact remains that the impatience is perpetual to have a fully viable and operational UT. And despite the participation of the community at large, the power is in the hands of the developers and the non-developer user must learn to receive what is given to him and it is a work on oneself.
-
... a fully viable and operational UT.
The commitment of HalloWelt with the Volla Phones and FairPhone are a huge step in this direction. As these companies will potentially provide at the very least more incentive to put continued effort into continuing and improving support for these devices.
Community based ports suffer extensively from the 'bus factor'.
... the power is in the hands of the developers ...
This is always the case. Testing and raising issues can only get a project so far, if there are not enough hands to handle the issues or coordinate the testing.
Of course testing and raising issues should also be more a dialogue with the developer rather than a fire-and-forget for the user. -

I think it is dependent on the device manufacturer more than the OS developer, which is why Volla is probably the best bet.
