trying to build UT miatoll (need advice and direction)
-
so i cloned UT from gitlab and im attempting to build it directly to try to get a feel for it im looking at the docs page https://docs.ubports.com/en/ im getting this error on the command line its complaining about the deviceinfo file but it is present and appears ok?? im assuming im missing a dependency but this is what im getting:
developerbayman@developerbayman:~$ '/home/developerbayman/Desktop/ubuntu touch miatoll/xiaomi-miatoll/build.sh'- BUILD_DIR=
- OUT=
- '[' 0 -gt 0 ']'
++ realpath ''
++ echo out - OUT=out
- mkdir -p out
- '[' -z '' ']'
++ mktemp -d - TMP=/tmp/tmp.qHmkOxMgOW
++ mktemp -d - TMPDOWN=/tmp/tmp.AkUxj7xYon
++ pwd - HERE=/home/developerbayman
+++ realpath '/home/developerbayman/Desktop/ubuntu touch miatoll/xiaomi-miatoll/build.sh'
++ dirname '/home/developerbayman/Desktop/ubuntu touch miatoll/xiaomi-miatoll/build.sh' - SCRIPT='/home/developerbayman/Desktop/ubuntu touch miatoll/xiaomi-miatoll/build'
- mkdir -p /tmp/tmp.qHmkOxMgOW/system
- mkdir -p /tmp/tmp.qHmkOxMgOW/partitions
- source /home/developerbayman/deviceinfo
/home/developerbayman/Desktop/ubuntu touch miatoll/xiaomi-miatoll/build.sh: line 37: /home/developerbayman/deviceinfo: No such file or directory

Hello , excuse me for bothering you. I wanted to ask you did you had any success with building the Redmi note 9 pro port. I am considering to try to make the migration on focal. I am still reading and researching on what exactly has to be done.
-
@beyolf i have not had any success as a matter of fact i moved to droidian because everything i find to build halium and UT i simply could not get to work i have not totally abandoned UT however i need more experience so im utilizing the linuxness of droidian to learn ....my biggest gripe about UT is well you cant really do anything on the actual platform itself and most attempts at workarounds will leave you in a boot loop ......also i only have a orange pi 5 to work with and my phone itself and a super ancient laptop (which is so slow i only use it for flashing and takes FOREVER)
-
@beyolf also no bother at all!
-
to be blunt the reason i havent totally abandoned UT is the community fact of the matter droidian is what i have been wanting the whole time ......all you all are basically to awesome to just abandon
-
its in my opinion the locked down and nature of ubuntu touch is and will ultimately kill the project i hope not of course but after hanging around the droidian and UT communities it becomes apparent .....someone posted "bringing more devs to UT" and my very statement comes to mind .......my only hope is that UT gets updated to behave more like linux with permissions set set like normal desktop ubuntu ....my main reason for wanting to build UT was to change this behavior on my own but droidian beat me to it i guess
-
the final straw for me was the simple lack of pip and the inability to install it .....as a DEVELOPER it annoyed me to no end .... some of us are poor and need to dev on our phones someone on here awhile back said something to the effect of "we have to be careful about space usage" as a reason for excluding pip .....we now live in the age of TB sdcards .... 48 mb will not break the camels back ....lol i like to think my complaining is is the litmus of "why" UT is having issues personally i think if the UT project keeps on the current trajectory it should have a name change while it may have use a linux kernel it does not behave like linux/ubuntu.......but on a positive note UT interface is way better than droidians its less buggy and more responsive and seems to have opengl and gles more in a better place please take note my complaining isnt to disparage ubuntu touch but to inspire a slight change in direction of the project for the betterment of the project i see so much potential that isnt being tapped based on ideas of security that basically locks out larger scale improvement edit: also i could never not once get libertine to work even remotely successful
-
and to be fair iv only used UT on a xaiomi redmi note 9 pro so i only understand UT from that angle
-
also im not a real big fan of clickable i see the draw .....but what of all those wonderful .deb/snap/flatpak/docker files out there?
-
i will say though UT in its current form would make a excellent government phone or any business that need security as a priority

Thank you for the info. I managed to build the stable version of miatoll port today . And from tomorrow I will start working on focal. I will try droidian too since I am also interested more in having closer desktop feeling on my phone , but I also want to try to maintain miatoll for UT too. I believe with focal and libertine containers we can have good desktop feeling on UT too
