Updates stuck on devel channel
-
With the release of OTA-3 I tried switching the update channel in the settings from devel to stable, but even after getting the confirmation that it switched it keeps displaying the devel channel and only downloading the devel build (704 at the time of this writing)
From adb shell I ran
sudo system-image-cli --switch ubuntu-touch/stable
followed bysudo system-image-cli -v -p 0 --progress dots
It installed the same devel image as before (build 704):
[systemimage] Nov 09 11:10:15 2023 (4333) Local channels file: /tmp/system-image-teh8hl45/channels.json [systemimage] Nov 09 11:10:15 2023 (4333) got channel: 20.04/arm64/android9plus/devel [systemimage] Nov 09 11:10:15 2023 (4333) found channel/device entry: 20.04/arm64/android9plus/devel/sargo [systemimage] Nov 09 11:10:15 2023 (4333) [0x714c1c44f0] Requesting group download: https://system-image.ubports.com/20.04/arm64/android9plus/devel/sargo/index.json -> /tmp/system-image-teh8hl45/index.json https://system-image.ubports.com/20.04/arm64/android9plus/devel/sargo/index.json.asc -> /tmp/system-image-teh8hl45/index.json.asc [systemimage] Nov 09 11:10:15 2023 (4333) Allow GSM? I'm not sure what to change next? Device is a Pixel 3a.

@kyleh
Work around would be to use the installer.Do you remember when was your last devel update ?
Since there has been a work for the channel change issue , but was 1 month ago. -
@lduboeuf Last update was probably July or so, so it's been a minute.

Ok, it may explain. So better try with the installer

Hello, this my first post. I have a Volla X23 deliverd with focal. After changing the update channel to rc it is not possible to go back to stable - even if it is shown. Actuel I am on os build 2023-W44.
Is there a rc image for OTA-3? I don't think so.
Is it possible to go first to channel development to fix this channelproblem before i can switch to stable for upgrade to OTA-3?
Thanks & Greetings

That is probably because RC == Stable
Hi and welcome.

@Charly OTA-3 is the latest stable version of 20.04 Focal and only the stable channel gets OTAs.
New developments of UT start of in the Devel channel and get updates mostly everyday or so and is where things start getting tested and can be high risk.
The RC channel gets updates far less frequently and is the final testing place for a new OTA release before it is made and is mostly a safe place to be but there is a slight risk.
RC then moves to Stable becoming an OTA when all testing is done.
This means at certain points both Stable and RC may be the same but usually RC is slightly ahead in the development cycle than Stable.
You could certainly go to Devel and back to Stable to check or just run through the installer again if you want. -
Thank you for your answers. On the whole, the channel concept is clear to me.
I will describe my problem in more detail.
I received an update of 271 MB on the rc channel on 31.10.2023. Was that already the rc from Ota-3? The other OTAs had a size of approx. 680 MB for me.
then I read here in the forum that there is no RC for OTA-3 this time. Time reasons and technical delays were mentioned.
Yes, and then I personally have the problem that I can no longer switch from channel RC to channel stable on ut. Even if I do that, it switches back to RC after a short time.So if there is no RC this time and I can't switch to stable, how do I get OTA-3?
I haven't received a software update in the last two days.Sorry I am confused.
Thank you very much for your help. -
Update, a sw update has just arrived.
Version 7, which seems to be the rc name. It is 683 mb as expected.
Looks like an rc has now been added.I'll test if I can change the update channel to stable again.
But what did I receive on 31.10.? It was good and stopped the memory lacks.
Thank you very much!

@Charly What happened this time that should not happen again is that there eas not time for the normal call for testing by the community of the last RC release before it become the OTA state. That testing was confined to the devel group. That should not happen again.
The RC on the 31st was just a part of the normal RC update process.
The new OTA-3 started being rolled out on Monday and normally takes a couple of days but can take a week.
It is easier to think of Devel and RC getting updates and only Stable gets OTAs.
RC will continue to get updates over the next weeks prior to OTA-4 -
Thank you very much for the detailed answer!
How can I report the known errors for ota-4 to help?
- GPS info in photos incorrect
- Workaround for LTE necessary otherwise only 2G
- Change volume during phone call
Etc.
