Focal/20.04 is out for quite a while now. You still use Xenial/16.04? I would like to know what stops you from upgrading?

@vince-vs I try. Sadly I don't understand much of that low level stuff. I can test and report. That's it. But this is important. And if things work, as a tester you get new features quickly.

It's the whole result that doesn't suit me, even though we're on ota-4 focal.
Why is that?So far I can see three issues, that for you make focal "not suiting you":
- led not working
- sound sometimes missing in video recording
- no full translation
Regarding 1., we should really get the devices page amended, so it reflects the current not-working state. To be honest, even if the led works, on the OP5T I hardly see it. Its so tiny. So I don't rely on it on this device, although I wish it would be better. It was of much more use on my Xperia X and I did rely on it a lot there. And I do fully understand and accept that your feelings here are different.
Regarding 2, I agree, very annoying to do a recording of your daughters flute play to find out later it's without sound. But it is being worked on and we have workarounds. Definitely not good for sure. Not sure though we can make the devices page reflect this.
Regarding 3, I can only repeat: Xenial had OTA's without full translation. Some languages have never ever been fully translated. They never ever saw an OTA with full translation, not on Xenial, not on Focal.
It works like this: There is a code freeze, an OTA is build and released, then changes in code and updates of translations come in until the next freeze for the next OTA. And so on. So it simply depends if between two OTA's there are new strings added (by new features) and when updates for translations for them get merged into the repositories.The last Xenial OTAs where mainly bug fixes. So no new features, no new strings. No surprise to have static, but full translations. With focal we get new features. New features mean new words. Some get translated before the freeze, some only for the next OTA and some languages never get translated.
Of course there are also bugs, and I think focal did introduced maybe a few, where the ability of being translatable of a few strings got lost. That needs fixing, of course. But it has been the same with Xenial too. I myself did make some strings translatable in a few apps there. That I honestly believe can't be counted as "bad spot" of focal.
But thanks for sharing your thoughts. That's what this post is about. And if we get the devices page updated, this is an improvement.

@danfro
Hello,
To lighten things up a bit, I'm going to tell you that a child who can't hear the music he's playing on a recording can be dramatic afterwards. But I like your sense of humour, and it wasn't actually a recording of a child playing the flute.
It was an explanation from someone who was demonstrating to my mum how to reassemble a part on her hearing aids ... it's funny, then, because when we watched the video, I understood even better the handicap of people who don't hear well ...
Another recording concerned a strange noise in my car when I was driving, and when I showed the video to the mechanic, he told me there was no noise and that cost me 30 minutes of his time ...
As you can see, there's plenty to laugh or cry about - that's life!
Yes, under Xenial the sound worked, and on my BQ5 and on OPT5, in French, everything was well translated, and that's where I don't understand (and this is not only the case on UT, but sometimes also under interfaces like gnome or kde), one version is well translated, and the next, for the same functions, is not well translated; that raises questions, doesn't it?
Have a nice weekend, and thank you for your investigations and what you bring to the UT community and users. -

To conclude, I'd like to say that if the OPT5 devices page says that these functions are validated, they are not.
Just to let you know, I created a MR to fix devices page for the OP5/5T: https://gitlab.com/ubports/infrastructure/devices.ubuntu-touch.io/-/merge_requests/560.

Hello,
I'm still on 16.04, because 20.04 doesn't work with my Oneplus 1 :

@danfro
Hello,
Thanks, great, but now I can complain less ... because it's no longer in the top 10 ...
In any case, it's clearer and maybe we'll be able to find someone to fix these bugs.
Regarding the camera, it seems to me that the sound after recording is more stable.
Can you confirm this ? -

I am afraid: no. I did had the workaround installed, that is described here. And now I am running the new kernel I linked further up that has got that patch included. So I won't have this issue at all.

@danfro
Hello,
Please note that the audio recording of the camera does not work after broadcasting a call from OPT5; during an external call, there is no such problem.
If the only solution will be the new kernel, for the moment, until it's in a stable release, I can't risk installing it on a phone I use every day.
Do you think the new kernel will soon be available as a stable ota release ?
Sincerely -
@vince-vs I think you might refer to this general issue, that is raised from a certain time ago now. It's not "Focal" relative as it occurred on Xenial. Same happens on Volla Phone and Redmi Note 9S. (20.04 - OTA-4)
Since we're on focal I didn't test the sound script workaround described in the Github ticket:

@stanwood
Hello,
Ha, so it's been a long time already.
It's a shame for such an important feature on a smartphone ...
In any case, I can tell you that in 2022, on my OPT5,
it worked, because I had to use the camera and film ( with sound ) to show my car dealer that there was a problem in the steering of the car and fortunately because it was repaired ...
Anyway, maybe if the new kernel that @danfro is talking about will be available in a very soon ota, maybe that will fix this annoying bug.
Sincerely -
Just to share my experience, few days ago Waydroid stopped to work for me with my Pixel 3a on 16.04 Stable channel. I was then forced to pass to 20.04, since I still need to have whatsapp in some ways available. I thought that upgrating from within the OS itself straight to 20.04 it would have been a good idea, avoiding using the Ubports installed but it was a great pain instead; it upgraded to 20.04 but OS resulted severely broken. In fact any kind of gesture I was used to was slower and unresponsive most of the time. Phone storage was awfully clogged, 60 GB nearly full for no apparent reason like if the new OS installed along with the old one. Subsequently, I decided to employ the Ubports installer without selecting the wipe option in order to preserve my data but it never ended the process, after many attempts with different usb cables (at least 5 cables I tried). There was no way to resurrect the phone, therefore in the end I was obliged to try to install by means of the Ubports installer but this time tapping on the wipe tick, to install from scratch. It worked flawless and now I'm on Focal 20.04. Unfortunately I lost some of my data, but luckily I was wise enough to backup at least my personal videos and pictures. The new environment seems much snappier than before, but I'll report my experience on that in a few days to get used to it.
