Since support for volte is an important aspect when buying a phone which is compatible with Ubuntu Touch, I am interested to know if we could see volte added to the devices page so that it is easier for new members of the community to have this information listed differently then just a planet icon attached to Incoming, outgoing calls. I also see that the pixel 3a and 3axl are listed as 100% supported, but as it seems they might never get volte supported they really should not be listed as having full support as volte is basically fundamental to using a phone in the first place for much of the world.
I know not every devices is perfectly supported and its still very much experimental, but I do still believe it should be listed on its own.

        Any thoughts on this?

Yes but it's even worse than that, since this page says unequivocally that it is impossible to do Volte calls.

Yet this is not what is said here:

          https://docs.ubports.com/en/latest/userguide/dailyuse/volte.html

talking about support but only some Volla devices.

Yet there are reports floating of Volte working for other devices (but is it specifically about Volte calling ?)

These seemingly contradictory statements are very confusing.

@gpatel-fr Well, that is true... but to be fair it's a confusing situation because it's very much in flux.

All right. I guess that you are not a developer yourself ? or at least not of the telephony part ?
So you don't have any clear information yourself, only second hand ?

If it is the case, could you at least try to make the devs understand that writing some information about the situation even if with all caveats apply such as 'it worked like this at this point of time' with no warranty about other versions and other providers known to work at this time, could be better than nothing ?

I think of the information asked for by @Lumpology, upgrading it at least one time by month or even per 2 months (even to say that nothing has changed) and at least updating this mystifying part:

              Incoming, outgoing callsBugtracker

Calling over VoLTE is not supported, please check that this is not a requirement in your country.

Because well, for an open source project, asking people to get direct access at developers on a proprietary platform like Telegram is not very self conscious. If they want it, that's their call, but in this case they should take some care of giving information by other channels.

It's in the interest of the project because all quotes that can be given on the project state are on your web site, and at this time, anyone can pretend that the project is dying because it can't even support 4G telephony. If you have good news, give them officially so it can be cited, indexed on the Internet.

              Thanks.

That is all correct. But I do know that VoLTE is currently one of the highest priority projects for our devs. And it's moving so fast that I understand why they don't manage to keep all information updated at the moment.

One of the best places for gathering information directly from the devs is the bi-weekly Q&A. If you can't listen to it live, you can do so afterwards and there are also often transcripts released. They can be found here: https://ubports.com/blog/ubports-news-1

UBports is a small community of mostly volunteers. We're not professionals, and we know it shows. If you find us lacking in some way, maybe you can figure out a way to help.

Well, I have contributed to a few open source projects, but I had the opportunity to run software on my computer, and see what was not working like I hoped, do some fixes and test them before sending them back to the upstream.

Since my last Android phone died a few years ago, I don't have any hardware to test Ubuntu touch. If I buy one, I'd hope that it can be of some use, like I use my computer to read the web, exchange mails, without having to write kernel drivers, so I hope to get a phone that can be used to make and receive calls. As of now, I have no idea if this is really possible. Volla don't seem to be interested in my post. No clear information in this project either.

I tried to browse gitlab, but it's very difficult to find useful information since there are so much repos. I gathered that ofono is the software responsible for phone management, but its repo has not been updated since 8 months. It seems that upstream is on the Linux foundation site and is actively updated, but not from Ubuntu touch developers it seems. So as far as I can understand, UT devs are managing a fork from the original repo and doing changes without publishing them, or in a repo that I was unable to find. This is not very heartening. I had some hope after seeing the FLX1s annoucement, as they were talking about 4G phone use, but now I think that every Linux phone has their own private tree and are not collaborating.

I have still my dumbphone and now I think that I will use it for years to come 😞

As far as I know it is. Fairphone 5 seems to be a good current option, and it supports VoLTE.

@gpatel-fr Can confirm Fairphone 5 VOLTE works as expected on 24.04.
Battery life has been great, SMS works, MMS (I have not tested with the final release of 24.04 only a RC) worked but only with WiFi off AS OF 9/16/25.
Otherwise I think its fairly solid device and works well with UT.
