New Ubuntu Touch user looking for some starting tips
-
I recently installed Ubuntu Touch. Very hopeful I can make it usable enough to abandon IOS / Android.
There are a few apps I can't live without, and looking for possible ways of getting usage from them in the current state of Ubuntu Touch. How are people overcoming non-official releases of these products as of April 2024 -

Signal App
I currently use Molly FOSS (an open source Signal fork) in Waydroid, in tandem with Signal on desktop. It's not a perfect solution. The native Axolotl is in development but they're having trouble keeping up with all the changes in Signal.
Reddit
This app is for Xenial, but you can still download it through the browser, and install it like that. And it works fine on Focal.

I think you are going to have to give up on that one.

In my case, @nichodiaz

I don't now what that is. For 2FA I use https://open-store.io/app/tfamanager.cibersheep
- Signal App

I quitted it (I don't support transphobic business anymore), I use Mastodon
I don't use it, but I would go to their website.
- Preferred browser (Brave)
Current browser is Morph.
- Proton Mail
Dekko should support main options, otherwise through website

- Proton VPN
Proton VPN seems not to work because a ¿technicality? But other VPN should work: https://forums.ubports.com/post/79399

@nichodiaz Another option for reddit if you decide to install waydroid on ubuntu touch, is to use the 'redreader' app which is open source

@nichodiaz I use protonvpn on my volla phone X.
https://ubports.com/en/blog/ubports-news-1/post/using-vpn-in-ubuntu-touch-3065It works with wifi, not with data.

First thing I think is to set your expectation. It'll be very hard to completely abandon iOS/Android. I managed to only use UT for around 5 years but had to have an Android phone as secondary phone in the past few years. Some things are just not possible on UT. There's Waydroid to try some apps that you need but not all will work especially those that needs security checks and such. Waydroid also drains the battery.
X and Proton Mail can only be accessed via the browser/webapp. Proton mail doesn't support the usual email configs (IMAP/SMTP) so you can't use Dekko. There are a few Reddit clients in the store though not sure how good they are compared to just using the web version.
We currently only have Morph as the browser with Sapot browser as a fork with a bit different UI but still the same web engine which is sadly outdated right now due to technicalities.
