Before going into the issue you are posting about, could you tell us what you are trying to achieve? Do you want to make your UT device multi user? Are you trying to change the password of the phablet user? Please let us know what your goal is, so we can avoid an X Y situation.

@liam I am afraid that even if you could add a new user to your device, it would not work. At the moment UT is not yet ready to be used in a multi-user state. Too many parts of the OS still assume that phablet is the current and only user.

Ok I want to change my default password. The issue is that when I set a numeric password I cannot change it via character keyboard.
I changed my password in terminal and now I cannot change it back. When unlocking the phone I have to fail 4 times on numeric keyboard so the system will offer me character keyboard, then it works.
I tryed reinstalling UT but it preserves my password settings.
It seems like numeric and character keyboards are somehow not the same.

                Regards

@CyBerT There is no default password on UT, just the password you entered originally when installing the system. Changing the password on the command line is not supported and can lead to the issues you experienced of you are not careful.

Try changing your password back to a numeric code, with the same amount of digits a before.
Then go to the privacy settings in the settings app and change your password there to alphanumeric if you so wish.

@arubislander I originally changed password in terminal because I could not change the password I set when installing with settings manager.

@CyBerT Did you do anything else after installing and before attempting to change the password? Like maybe making the filesystem writable and trying to install stuff via apt?

If the system is misbehaving this badly I would suggest backing up all data you would like to keep and running your device again through the installing but this time also selecting the 'wipe data' checkbox to return to a fresh known state.

@arubislander when updating I did have to change the ownership of the home folder, so I could save photos from camera and various files. I did change password like you said and it worked. Maybe the problem was home folder not beeing writeable.

                        Solved.

@CyBerT said in Onepluse6T change adduser and change password not work, passwd: Authentication token manipulation error:

did have to change the ownership of the home folder,

Glad you got it solved. But the above is never necessary. Maybe start another thread describing the issue you were facing that made you think you needed to solve it in this way. It might be possible to solve Inna different way, that will not break the system.
