Dear fellow Ubuntu enthusiasts,
It has been my wish for many years to engage with the politics and aesthetics of Ubuntu on my phone too. This has been possible for me ever since I bought a Fairphone 2. What has kept me from flashing it to Ubuntu Touch is that this beautiful mobile OS isn't compatible with apps offering voice chat like Signal. I would love to use such an app to both write and talk with family members who use Android or iOS.
Is there any chance that Signal or another app offering voice chat will become available in the OpenStore anytime soon?
This would lead me to flash my phone immediately!
Thank you in advance for answering my question.

@thomasbenjamin maybe you can try https://open-store.io/app/textsecure.nanuc?
-
Thank you, @advocatux But the Signal app in the OpenStore doesn't offer voice chat at the moment, does it? Is there any chance that this will change anytime soon?
-
@thomasbenjamin I don't know, sorry.

It seems that the Skype Webapp has been updated and I believe it works with audio chat - https://open-store.io/app/skype.rubencarneiro - although it certainly is not really a privacy respecting solution like Signal should be - but at least there is one option out there currently.
Best regards,

There is a
Linphone
app in the store, for making SIP calls, too. -
Thank you for your concern in any case, @advocatux

This is great news, @TotalSonic ! I think Skype is a good alternative to Signal when it comes to making voice calls.

Linphone sounds perfect too, @dobey ! So this is in fact open source!
