I'm not sure if messaging is working properly
-
There were four conversations, so it seems the history does extend further than just a few. However, the handling of group MMS messages seemed suspect.
-
Well, I'm pretty sure that MMS group texts were messed up, and perhaps this led to the reporting of text history to be off.
However, I feel that maybe I had not set up things correctly. So, I'm going to try to reinstall Ubuntu Touch. But, this time I'll be sure to make the install as clean as possible, via wiping and formatting my phone first and then installing the OS. Then, I'll be sure to have data turned on and the settings for MMS/APN properly set (I think Ubuntu does this automatically, but I suspect I messed it up by screwing around, so I'm going to try again to be sure).
So, I'm going to give Ubuntu Touch another try.

Hmm. I'm still not confident. I got a message from a friend ("Merry xmas y'all louts and lass!!") that I KNOW is a group MMS message. Yet it shows as having come solely from the one friend. Yet the option to respond to all isn't there (it appears my response went solely to the friend who sent it, but not the group as a whole). And I'm not seeing any other messages from anyone else in the group.

The APN and "Internet and MMS" settings seem correct. I use Public Mobile, which has instructions here: https://apn-canada.gishan.net/en/apn/public-mobile/ubuntu
I checked the current settings, and all correspond to what the Public Mobile site has put forth, except for the following: "Protocol: IPv4". I saw no space to enter it, but I assume that is the protocol the phone is using.

I'll wait a bit and see. If anyone has any suggestions, do please share.

Sending and receiving MMS is indeed quite broken -- there are a raft of relevant issues at https://github.com/ubports/ubuntu-touch/issues?utf8=✓&q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+mms. It's one of those things that I keep getting pulled away from, and don't make much progress on while I'm working on it.
-
@UniSuperBox -- Hmm, yes, I've browsed some of the various bug reports, and there's often different feedback, ranging from (1) "not working at all for me", which then is followed by (2) "really? works fine for me". This seems to lead to the conclusion, "needs verification". So, I hoped I could get myself in the "works for me" camp.
The Nexus 5 is my only phone, so I need it to work. I have built an unofficial LineageOS package that works on my phone, so I have a choice (LineageOS stopped support of the Nexus 5 awhile ago, so those wishing to keep an updated version need to build it themselves). But, I do like the rough Linux-like feel of Ubuntu Touch.
I'm going to test it with my family tomorrow (it being holiday time), by having them send group texts, to actually see how the phone reacts when I know what's happening.
-
Okay, I met up with my family over the holidays, and right before my eyes I had my sister send me 1.) a message directly to me, and 2.) a message to a group that included me. I received the message sent directly to me, but I did not receive the message that was sent to a group that included me. So, for me, using Public Mobile (which is associated with Telus), MMS does not work (I'm using a Nexus 5). For messages sent directly to me, the Message History seems fine. [edit] Nuts. I just realized that I left data closed (after some issues I had with unexplained data usage I was having -- partially caused by the "offline" uNav app I was attempting to set up). Nuts. I really did want to properly test this. But, after struggling to get this phone up to a standard I could live with, I decided to try out /e/ (edit: I tried it and decided that I just prefer LineageOS). Installing Ubuntu Touch from Android (or LineageOS or whatever) is okay, but going from Ubuntu Touch back to LineageOS is horrendous (the Ubuntu Touch Recovery is just not very intuitive). I just can't bear the thought of going through that again. (edit: after installing /e/, I got a variety of group messages that I had formerly missed on UT, and I didn't have data enabled).

I have the exact same problem, no group texts coming through. I can send a group text (and all recipients receive the message) but when a group message comes through from either a ios or android phone, I don't get the message. I did check my apn settings, data roaming etc.. Running 16.04 on AT&T LTE.
Do some people get group texts or is this hit or miss per user? Anyone else see, encounter or solve this problem?
-
By the way, I originally did not get MMS. When I enabled data roaming that solved the problem for me. I immediately started receiving MMS. Receiving group texts still not resolved.
-
@MarkG_108 maybe better to create a new topic for mms group text than getting a long conversation on several problems .
-
@lduboeuf Good idea. There have been several on this topic over the years and all seem to end the same way though, no conclusive fix, yet. @UniSuperBox has pointed to a good starting point https://github.com/ubports/ubuntu-touch/issues?utf8=✓&q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+mms
