Nexus 5 vs Nexus 5x
-
@jjconstr that's bad news for you. You'll need to verify what other networks are in your area and give them a go. I was not aware that Verizon black listed the N5. What a shame.
-
@Flohack
Does the blacklist include PagePlus(Verizon)? -
@rocket2nfinity
Especially when it is the only carrier with coverage where I live. The ebay ad did specify Nexus D820. -

It is worth a try. If no carrier will take it here, how about advertising a Linux Ubuntu Touch international phone on ebay?
Would that spread the popularity of UT? The proceeds could be split with UBports.
-
@jjconstr
Would a N5 in bootloop flash UT successfully? Installing UT in N5's for resale is interesting to me. I see one advertised on ebay. -
@jjconstr Generally yes, if it truly is blacklisted across the whole network. If it's just being blocked by Verizon because it won't do VoIP (what Verizon calls HD Voice - Wifi/VoLTE which they require a special download for) then it can still get access through one of the various Verizon based MVNOs.
The only way to find out is to input your IMEI in PagePlus or other MVNOs checker. If they say you're good to go, then you'll at least get data. You should also check US Cellular, Cingular, whoever else you may have in the area. It's quite rare these days to really have just one carrier in an area. The other one might not be as good, but if they have a store in your area, then they have coverage. I'd really be surprised if you didn't have either at&t or T-mobile in your area.
Check and let us know

To be clear, the blacklisting of N5 from Verizon won't matter too much, because CDMA does not currently work on UT. Only GSM networks will work.
So, if they still require CDMA for voice/sms connection, it won't work. T-Mobile has extremely good coverage these days.
-
@jjconstr Then your D820 Nexus 5 should be good to go. Do you have an active sim card of any kind that you can put in the phone? If so, please do and even though Verizon will not connect, go to settings, cellular, network and see if you see any networks popping up. If you do, write down what you see and find out who they are as that is who you can get cell service with.
-
@jjconstr regarding the boot loop, the N5 is really hard to break. Chances are it will boot with the installer. That's why we love the N5 so much around here, it's very difficult to brick. So, if it's in a boot loop, it's most likely that way because someone flashed a wrong file or borked the partitions.
You could take a chance on it and use it as a learning experience to see if this sort of thing is your cup of tea. Otherwise, it's great parts to fix yours if you damage it. I often keep a broken spare just for the parts.

@rocket2nfinity
ATT rejected my IMEI also, from their website. Though Id call them to make sure. Ill keep checking even for carriers with no service right at my house(we have land line also). By the way, what is MVNOI checked my IMEI on Imei checker. It is a D820. one odd thing was under comments, IMEI.info: Negative byAnonymouson 2016/05/20 01:24Opinion:THIS IMEI # SHOWS UP ON A 16GB LG NEXUS 5 BEING SOLD BY WOOT.COM FROM A SELLER IN ASTORIA, NY
Is that just a dealer that sold it at one time? Or is it a bad IMEI?
Thanks for the great reply. -
@dobey Good to know. I haven't used Verizon in years. I did not see that, about CDMA, in the forums anywhere. That is something that should be put in the devices guide if it's not a temporary thing.
-
@jjconstr What specifically did at&t's IMEI checker say? It sounds like you may have a phone not released from someone's account. Hopefully not stolen. You will need to contact Woot or whomever it says owns the account to get it released, or via a paid service. If it specifically said it was reported stolen, then you won't be able to use it on any network. If that's the case, keep it to experiment with, or get your money back. If it's just still locked to someone's account, that can be fixed by contacting the last seller you just listed.
An MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) is a company that does not own it's own towers, but leases service from one of the major networks and sells that service to you. PagePlus, for instance, or SimpleMobile. Some MVNOs are owned by the major networks. At&t owns Cricket, T-Mobile owns Metro by T-Mobile, Sprint owned Boost until last week.

We have ATT, Verizon, StraightTalk, Consumer, some satellite carriers that I know of from the phone book and seeing in walmart -
@jjconstr Then it appears your problem is that the phone is not released from someone's account. If it hasn't been reported stolen, it can be unlocked. It is often easier to just go through a paid service rather than fight the previous seller to unlock the device from the previous owner's account. It should have been done automatically, but sometimes it isn't. Here's how to accomplish that.

Any of the paid services in that list will do. It should cost between $10 - $20 to achieve that. Could take an hour to a few days depending on who you use and what they need to do to get it released.

The power button can eventually poop out, which gives you a boot loop. I have two N5's down, have two replacement buttons, but it's a pretty tedious repair, so haven't made the time to buckle down and attempt it.
-
@vandys That is true. It's fixable though if you have the skills. I do, so I don't think of it as a device killer. A more common cause for boot loop is a bad software flash. It can get tricky getting out of that sand trap once you're in it. I've repaired many devices that were "dead" like that. Some of those fixes are beyond what the average user can do.

@dobey
Good to know. Ill check Tmobile too. -
