Ubuntu Touch Q&A 77 Saturday 6th Of June At 19:00 UTC

  • With the upcoming merge of the updated qtwebengine, anyone looking into website notifications and webpush for Morph and webapps?

  • Could apt be replaced with a script directing people trying to use it outside libertine to an explanation of why it's a bad idea?

  • Two questions regarding the current plans for apps across different mobile distros. They might be stupid or previously answered, but I did not have much luck with the search function. I'm not particularly concerned with the state of affairs at the moment, this is more about where the development is headed over the next months and years.

    1. As far as I understand, Plasma Mobile and Ubuntu Touch are making some efforts to make the same Qt apps run effortlessly on both platforms. Is it likely that the same app store (OpenStore, I assume) would be a default feature on both platforms?
    2. The Gnome world seems to have a completely different take on the issue, with GTK4 apps developed with an adaptable interface using libhandy being seen as the way of the future. Will software developed in this manner (like future releases of Geary or Gnome Maps) be easily available on UT, possibly even in the OpenStore? And should it be expected to run about as well on Ubuntu Touch as, say, PostmarketOS?

Guess I'm just worried about fragmentation. 🙂

  • What did Flo say was his Twitter account? lamux? linux_mage?

  • @Opolork lanux_mage
    Here's his twitter: https://twitter.com/lanux_mage

  • Are you planning to add full device encryption on devices that can handle it with UT?
Encryption is important for privacy issues, but i think you know that already 😁

  • @Keneda Might be best to save the one till next weeks Q&A becomes available

  • @Lakotaubp
Yes, i don't know why i though this thread was about Q&A for yesterday, but there was not Q&A yesterday lol...

  • @Keneda These are strange times 👽

The answer given in Q&A when I asked a year or more (maybe two) ago was essentially "yes, eventually, but after all the other major efforts are out of the way."

In terms of those major efforts, a few of those have been crossed off the list since (Xenial, lomiri), but a number remain (Halium, Focal, Anbox, etc.), as well as others no doubt.

In recognition that the everyone has different priorities but those doing the actual development get to decide which come first, I've not inquired further, because I am not in a good position to contribute to a feature like this, and the developers are working wonders between each OTA. The OS is worlds beyond what it was when I first encountered it.

There is a method you can find elsewhere in this forum by which you can mount an encrypted block file over your home directory, which you may find better than nothing, but don't try it unless you really understand what it is doing and what it is and is not doing to secure your data.
